Chapter 2 - The Digital Evidence

Leo held his breath, his thumb hovering over the screen as the classroom door banged against the interior wall. The sudden noise made Mrs. Gable freeze mid-sentence, her manicured fingers slowly loosening their cruel grip on Lily’s curly hair. Lily slumped forward, coughing and gasping for breath against the rim of the trash can, her small shoulders shaking uncontrollably. Mrs. Gable spun around, smoothing the lapels of her dark blue blazer, her expression shifting in a split second from enraged monster to calm educator.

Leo didn’t flinch. He quickly stopped the recording, tucked the phone safely beneath a thick social studies workbook, and kept his gaze locked firmly on his desktop. He knew that if Mrs. Gable caught him filming, she would confiscate the device and delete the proof before anyone else could see it. The weight of what he had just captured felt heavy in his chest, buzzing with the urgent potential to change everything.

"Is there a problem out in the hallway?" Mrs. Gable called out, her voice dripping with a sickeningly sweet fake warmth that made Leo’s stomach turn.

A tall custodian stood in the doorway, holding a mop bucket and looking utterly confused by the heavy, suffocating silence in the room. He muttered an apology, muttered something about a spill down the hall, and quickly backed out, pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind him. The immediate danger of discovery passed, but the tension in the room remained thick enough to suffocate them all.

Mrs. Gable turned back to Lily, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. She leaned down and whispered something venomous into the weeping girl's ear, making Lily shrink back even further in sheer terror.

Leo’s mind raced. Simply deleting the video or keeping it to himself wasn't going to be enough to protect Lily from this daily torment. He needed to get the file off his device and into hands that actually possessed the authority to stop it. Without drawing attention, he carefully pulled the smartphone back out, opened an encrypted messaging app, and sent the raw video file directly to a trusted contact: his older sister, who worked as a dispatcher for the local police department.

As the progress bar crept toward one hundred percent, a notification popped up on his screen, indicating the file had been successfully delivered.

Just then, Leo's phone vibrated violently against the wood of his desk, letting out a sharp, unexpected ringtone that shattered the silence.
