Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The bright morning sunlight streaming through the tall classroom windows offered no warmth to ten-year-old Lily. Her scalp burned with a sharp, searing pain as Mrs. Gable gripped a handful of her curly brown hair, forcing her head down toward the metal trash can overflowing with wadded-up paper. Lily’s tears spilled over her cheeks, hot and fast, soaking the collar of her gray t-shirt. She twisted her small frame, trying to escape the agonizing grip, but the teacher’s fingers remained locked like a steel vise.

"Please stop, you're hurting me!" Lily sobbed, her voice cracking with pure terror as the smell of old paper and dust filled her nose.

Mrs. Gable leaned in close, her face twisted in an ugly mask of fury, her dark blue blazer stiff against her rigid shoulders. "Why didn't you sign up for my extra class?" she shouted, shaking the girl slightly to emphasize her point. "Do you think you're too good for my tutoring sessions just because your family is poor?"

"My house is too far away and I have to take care of my two younger siblings, I can't go!" Lily cried out hysterically, gasping for air between her heavy sobs. "I physically cannot stay after school!"

"Even if you don't go, you still have to pay!" Mrs. Gable screamed back, her voice echoing off the bare walls of the classroom, completely devoid of any professional restraint or human empathy.

A few rows back, Leo sat quietly at his school desk in his light blue t-shirt. His heart hammered against his ribs as his hand slid casually into his backpack. His fingers brushed against his smartphone. Without making a sound, he slid the device out, propped it against a textbook, and hit record. The lens captured every brutal second of the abuse, locking the horrific scene into digital permanence.
