Chapter 13 - The Final Line

Sterling’s calm composure faltered for a microsecond before his professional mask snapped back into place. He leaned slightly toward the rolled-down window, his eyes narrowing as he looked past Officer Miller toward Lily and Leo standing a few feet away.

"You think you’ve won a great victory today, Officer," Sterling said, his voice dropping into a low, threatening register. "You’ve arrested a superintendent and seized a few flash drives. But you have no idea how deep the roots go. The state budget committee signs off on every allocation we make. If you push this investigation any further, you won't just be fighting a local school district—you’ll be fighting the entire legislative apparatus of the state government. Careers will end. Pensions will vanish. And badge numbers like yours will quietly disappear overnight."

Officer Miller did not step back. She held her ground, her posture rigid and unyielding against the subtle intimidation tactics. She had seen institutional corruption before, but hearing it spoken so openly by a man holding absolute power made her blood run cold.

"My badge number stays right where it is, Sterling," Officer Miller replied sharply, her hand resting firmly on the grip of her sidearm. "And children like Lily are not going to be sacrificed to balance a corrupt state ledger. Your protection racket ends today."

Sterling let out a slow, mocking chuckle, sliding his dark aviator sunglasses back over his eyes. "We shall see, Officer. We shall see."

With a sharp roar of the engine, the luxury sedan accelerated away from the curb, kicking up a cloud of dust before disappearing down the long asphalt road toward the highway. Maya tapped her tablet rapidly, running a quick license plate trace.

"The vehicle is registered to a shell company tied directly to the state political action committee," Maya announced, her voice tinged with genuine alarm. "Miller, he wasn't bluffing. Half the state legislature is compromised by these exact funding streams."

Before Miller could formulate her next tactical move, her portable radio crackled to life with a frantic alert from the downtown precinct dispatcher.

"All units, all units, we have an emergency broadcast from the state attorney general's office," the dispatcher shouted over heavy static interference. "Federal marshals have just raided the downtown municipal archives, and the central server has suffered a catastrophic remote wipe. Every digital file we recovered has just been instantly deleted from our databases."

Officer Miller froze, staring at the empty road where Sterling's car had vanished. Maya stared down at her tablet in absolute horror as the glowing screen flickered, turned completely black, and displayed a single ominous error message.
