Chapter 4 - The Badge and the Fury

Officer Miller stood framed in the shattered doorway, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, utilitarian bun that emphasized the severe, uncompromising angle of her jaw. Her crisp police uniform was spotless, and her hand rested instinctively near the heavy leather holster on her utility belt. Behind her, two junior officers fanned out to secure the exits, their eyes scanning the room with calculated intensity. The bright morning light reflected off the polished silver badge pinned securely to her chest.
Mrs. Gable stepped back, her professional composure completely dissolving into a stuttering mess of nervous panic. "Can I help you officers? This is a private educational environment, you can't just—"
"Shut your mouth," Officer Miller interrupted, her voice a low, gravelly command that cut through the air with absolute authority. She stepped past the rows of desks, her boots clicking sharply against the tile floor until she stood directly in front of the teacher. The air in the room felt utterly frozen.
Officer Miller pulled her department-issued smartphone from her pocket, the screen still glowing brightly with the video file Leo had sent just minutes earlier. The footage played on a continuous loop, showing the unmistakable, horrific image of Mrs. Gable gripping Lily by her curly hair and forcing her face down toward the trash can.
Inside the police car parked outside, Officer Miller had stared at those exact frames with a mixture of shock and profound anger that made her blood run cold. She had watched the cruelty unfold on her small screen, listening to Lily’s desperate, tearful pleas and the teacher's harsh, unreasonable demands. Now, seeing the victim standing right in front of her, trembling in her gray t-shirt, the full reality of the systemic abuse hit her with crushing force.
"Kiara!" Officer Miller called out sharply, her gaze shifting away from the teacher to look directly at the frightened little girl standing near the trash can.
Lily flinched at the sound of her name, looking up with large, tear-filled eyes.
Officer Miller’s hardened expression instantly softened into something deeply protective, though her eyes remained flashing with lethal determination. She took two slow steps forward, ignoring the teacher entirely, and knelt down so she was eye-level with the terrified child.
"You're safe now, sweetie," Officer Miller said softly, her voice steady and warm. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you in this place again."
Mrs. Gable cleared her throat loudly, attempting to regain some shred of her lost dignity. "This is a gross misunderstanding. The child was being disruptive and disrespectful, and I was merely—"

Officer Miller didn't even bother to look back. Without turning her head, she thrust her hand out toward her partner, her voice dropping an octave into pure ice.
