Chapter 8 - The Empty Throne

The sound of the heavy office doors clicking shut behind the federal agents left a profound, suffocating silence in the room. Principal Henderson slumped backward into his leather chair, staring mindlessly at the gold-embossed seal on the leather folder as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.
Chloe stood frozen near the desk, her phone still clutched tightly in her hand, the screen glowing with plummeting stock tickers and breaking news notifications about the sudden collapse of Vance Enterprises. The realization seemed to hit her all at once, draining the color from her face until she looked entirely ghost-like.
"This isn't happening," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible, shaking her head in frantic denial. "It's a mistake. My dad is... he's Arthur Vance. He owns this city."
"He owned the illusion of it," Maya corrected quietly, stepping past the trembling blonde girl without sparing her another glance.
Maya picked up the leather-bound folder and the court injunction from the desk, sliding them neatly back into her bag. She didn't gloat, nor did she smile. Her expression remained that same chilling, deadpan calm that had unnerved Chloe in the cafeteria and broken her father's composure in the office.
Principal Henderson swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he looked up at Maya. "What... what happens to the students now? To the classes, the faculty, the programs?"
"Everything that was built on stolen funds will be audited and restructured under the original trust," Maya replied evenly, her hand resting on the brass doorknob. "You'll have your job, Principal Henderson, provided you pass the forensic audit. But the days of buying favors and burying student misconduct are over."
Without waiting for a response, Maya pulled the door open and stepped out into the hallway.
The corridor, which had been packed with anxious students whispering and recording videos on their phones moments ago, was now eerily quiet. Word had spread like wildfire through the school's digital network. As Maya walked down the polished linoleum floor, the students pressed themselves tightly against the lockers, parting her way with a mixture of terror and awe. Nobody dared to whisper. Nobody dared to laugh.
Maya kept her chin up, her dark hair falling straight down her back, completely untethered by the drama that had consumed the building. She pushed open the heavy glass exit doors, stepping out into the cool autumn air of the courtyard.
Just as she reached the outer gates of the school, a familiar voice called out from behind her, breathless and desperate.
"Wait! Stop right there!"
Maya paused, turning slowly around to find Chloe running across the pavement, her designer shoes clicking awkwardly, her high ponytail swinging wildly. The arrogant, untouchable queen of the school was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, tear-stained teenager facing a crumbling world.
Chloe stopped a few feet away, chest heaving, her eyes wide with a frantic mix of hatred and terror.
May you like
"What do you want, Chloe?" Maya asked, her tone entirely flat.
