Chapter 5 - The Forgery in the Vault

The grandfather clock in the corner of the office seemed to tick louder, filling the sudden vacuum of sound with a relentless, mechanical rhythm.
Chloe stood as if paralyzed, her hands gripping the back of the velvet armchair. "Faked? What are you talking about, Dad? Our family built everything! Vance Enterprises owns half the skyline! We're the Vances!"
"You're a Vance by adoption, Chloe, and by the billions of dollars I funneled into this city after the buyout," Arthur said, his voice devoid of its usual booming authority. He didn't look at her; his eyes were locked on Maya, carrying a heavy burden of exhaustion and lingering guilt. "I took her grandfather's company, his patents, and his name when he passed away. I left his family with nothing, pushing them into the shadows while I stepped into the light."
Maya slowly opened the leather folder. Inside lay a series of crisp, yellowed documents covered in legal seals, financial ledger copies, and a signature written in bold, sweeping ink.
"You didn't just take the company, Arthur," Maya said softly, turning a page to reveal a bank transfer record bearing a Swiss bank routing number. "You emptied the legacy trust fund two days before my mother fell ill. You left her without the funds for the treatment she desperately needed, all so you could buy your first corporate skyscraper."
Principal Henderson recoiled, sinking back into his leather chair as if he had just touched a hot stove. "My God... If these documents are authentic, that's corporate fraud on a massive scale. Not to mention grand larceny and falsification of identity."
"They're authentic," Maya stated, closing the folder with a sharp snap that made Chloe flinch. "Every single stamp, bank transfer, and audit trail has been verified by federal investigators over the past six months. I didn't transfer to this school to start a petty feud with your spoiled daughter, Chloe. I transferred here to deliver a message in person."
Chloe’s face turned from pale crimson to stark white. Her breath hitched in her throat. She stepped forward, her voice trembling as she pointed a shaky finger at Maya. "You... you planned this. You let me pour that chili on your head just to set a trap?"
May you like
Maya turned her head slowly, her dark eyes locking onto Chloe with a chilling intensity. "You dropped the food, Chloe. I just provided the stage."
