Chapter 10 - The Audits of Truth

Chloe staggered backward as if Marcus had physically struck her across the face. Her phone slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the concrete pavement with a sharp, echoing crack, the screen shattering into a web of glowing, distorted lines.

"Revoked... what do you mean revoked?" Chloe stammered, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper. She looked wildly between Marcus and Maya, her eyes welling up with fresh tears of absolute disbelief. "That's my college fund! That's my apartment! That's my entire life! You can't just take everything!"

"Everything you had was purchased with embezzled assets, Chloe," Marcus replied coldly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. He didn't show an ounce of sympathy; his tone was purely clinical, the voice of a man who had spent decades untangling webs of corporate deception. "The courts have determined that every asset held under your name was funded directly by the liquidation of the original Vance Family Trust. Legally, you never owned any of it."

Principal Henderson, who had cautiously followed them out to the courtyard to ensure he wasn't left in the dark, swallowed hard and stepped back toward the glass doors, terrified of being associated with the unfolding disaster.

"Mr. Vance—uh, Mr. Marcus," Henderson stammered nervously, wringing his hands. "What does this mean for the administration? Does this mean the school board is dissolving?"

Marcus turned his head slowly toward the principal, his gaze piercing. "The board is undergoing a complete restructuring. Every administrator who looked the other way while bullying and financial coercion ran rampant in these hallways will be investigated."

Henderson turned pale, retreating backward into the building without another word, letting the heavy glass doors swing shut behind him.

Maya looked down at the shattered phone lying on the pavement, then raised her dark eyes back to Chloe. The arrogant blonde girl who had dumped lukewarm chili over her hair just hours ago was completely gone, replaced by a broken teenager clinging desperately to a crumbling identity.

"You wanted to know if I was going to cry in the cafeteria," Maya said softly, her voice carrying a haunting echo of Chloe's own mocking words from earlier that morning. "Well, Chloe? Are you going to cry now?"

Chloe’s breath hitched. Her knees buckled slightly, and she grabbed onto the cold metal bars of the school gate to keep from falling. The humiliation she had inflicted on others came rushing back in full circle, amplified a hundredfold by the cold reality of her sudden destitution.

"You're a monster," Chloe whispered, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, ruining whatever was left of her makeup. "You took everything away just to watch me burn."

May you like

"I didn't burn anything, Chloe," Maya replied calmly, turning her back on the gates and walking toward the waiting black sedan. "I just turned on the lights."
