Chapter 7 - A Public Fall from Grace

The red light on the desk phone continued to pulse silently in the dim office, casting an eerie, warning glow across Principal Henderson’s terrified face. The administrator looked as though he might faint, his tie suddenly feeling entirely too tight around his neck.
"Restitution..." Henderson whispered, his voice trembling. "Mr. Vance, if the accounts are frozen... what happens to the school's endowment? What happens to the construction funds? The board—they'll tear us apart!"
Arthur didn't look at the principal. His eyes remained fixed on Maya, studying her features with a strange mixture of defeat and lingering disbelief. He saw the sharp intelligence in her dark eyes, the exact same resolute spirit her grandfather had possessed decades ago in a courtroom that had stripped him of everything.
"The school endowment will be returned to its rightful owner," Maya answered for him, her voice steady and commanding. She turned her gaze toward Henderson, whose posture wilted further under her gaze. "And every penny of fraudulent funding funneled into this district will be audited, account by account."
Chloe let out a choked sound, half-gasp, half-sob. The high ponytail that had bounced with such arrogance in the cafeteria just an hour ago now felt heavy and absurd. She gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white.
"You can't do this!" Chloe shouted, her voice breaking as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes, ruining her carefully applied makeup. "My life is here! My friends are here! We live in the manor on the hill! We own everything!"
"You own nothing, Chloe," Maya said gently, though her words carried the weight of an executioner's axe. "You were just renting a life built on a foundation of stolen glass. And checkout time has arrived."
Arthur slowly stood up, smoothing the front of his expensive navy blue suit—a suit that, as of this morning, technically belonged to a frozen estate. He walked toward the door, his head bowed slightly, carrying the heavy invisible chains of his past misdeeds.
"Come along, Chloe," Arthur said softly, his voice hollow as he reached for the brass doorknob.
"No! I'm not leaving!" Chloe screamed, stamping her foot against the Persian rug. "Tell her she's lying, Dad! Call your lawyers! Call the police!"
"The police are already in the lobby, Chloe," Maya said, her tone deadpan.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open wide without a knock. Two men in dark suits and federal windbreakers stepped smoothly into the room, their badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

"Arthur Vance?" the lead federal agent asked, his voice echoing in the tense silence. "We have a warrant for your immediate questioning regarding financial fraud and asset misappropriation."
