Chapter 11 - Shadows of the Penthouse

The heavy oak door of the Vance penthouse swung open, revealing an interior that was once the epitome of modern luxury, now looking stark, cold, and hollow. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the city skyline, but the glittering lights below no longer felt like a kingdom under command. They felt like an audience waiting for the final curtain call.
Chloe stood in the grand foyer, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her arms like a shield against the ghosts of her former life. The apartment was completely silent, save for the distant hum of the refrigerator in the sprawling kitchen. The domestic staff had already packed their belongings and left hours ago, following the freezing of the accounts.
"Dad?" Chloe called out, her voice echoing nervously through the cavernous hallway. There was no answer.
She walked slowly toward the living room, her footsteps sounding hollow against the polished marble floor. Arthur Vance sat alone in a high-backed leather armchair by the massive glass window. He had removed his suit jacket and tie, his white shirt collar unbuttoned, looking older, tireder, and profoundly defeated. A single glass of amber liquid sat untouched on the mahogany side table beside him.
"They're gone," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she dropped her bag onto the floor. "The cards... they're all declined. I tried to buy a cab to get back here, and the driver threw my luggage out on the street. Dad, tell me this is a bad dream. Tell me we still have the accounts in Zurich."
Arthur didn't turn around. He continued staring out at the sprawling city lights, his reflection ghost-like against the dark glass.
"There are no accounts in Zurich, Chloe," Arthur said, his voice quiet and raspy. "Marcus made sure of that. The federal investigators froze every single offshore asset before noon."
Chloe let out a choked gasp, rushing forward to grab his arm. "Then we sell the penthouse! We sell the cars, the art, the jewelry! We have millions in assets here!"
Arthur slowly turned his head to look at her, his eyes dead and heavy. "The penthouse belongs to the bank, Chloe. The art was seized by the federal marshal an hour before I was released on bail. We don't own a single square inch of this building."
Chloe staggered backward, her hands flying to her mouth as a sob finally broke free. The absolute reality of their ruin crashed down upon her with crushing weight. Everything she had ever known—her status, her wealth, her untouchable protection—had vanished into thin air like smoke.
"It's Maya's fault," Chloe hissed through her tears, anger flaring up once more beneath the despair. "She planned all of this! She walked into that school just to destroy us!"
"No, Chloe," a calm, resonant voice echoed from the shadows of the grand foyer.

Chloe spun around, her breath catching in her throat as a figure stepped out from the dim hallway light.
