Chapter 2 - The Sins of the Balance Sheet

The cafeteria’s collective intake of breath sounded like a sudden gale against windowpanes. Whispers rippled through the crowded room, bouncing off the concrete pillars and glass tables.
"Did she just call him... Dad?" a junior near the vending machines muttered, clutching his smartphone tightly as if afraid to record what was unfolding.
Chloe stood frozen, her mouth slightly open, the triumphant smirk completely erased from her features. Her blue eyes darted back and forth between Arthur Vance—the untouchable titan of industry, the man whose foundation funded half the district, the billionaire who bought her a brand-new sports car for her sixteenth birthday—and the quiet, chili-stained girl standing before him.
"Daddy? What is she talking about?" Chloe’s voice cracked, losing its sharp edge, replaced by a sudden, frantic panic. "Tell her she's lying! Make her clean it up!"
Arthur did not look at his daughter. His gaze remained fixed on Maya, his jaw tight, a muscle ticking violently near his temple. He was a man accustomed to commanding boardrooms, restructuring corporations with a single signature, and burying scandals before they reached the press. But here, in the harsh fluorescent glare of a public high school cafeteria, his absolute control was fracturing.
"Maya, please," Arthur repeated, his voice strained, ignoring the swarm of staring teenagers. "Let's go to my office. We can sort this out away from—"
"Away from the cameras?" Maya interrupted, her tone sharp as broken glass. She reached up slowly, wiping a streak of red sauce from her cheek with the back of her hand, leaving a stark smear across her skin. "Is that what you prefer, Arthur? Behind closed doors, where nobody can see the foundation you built on other people's ruins?"
The use of his first name struck the powerful executive like a physical blow. He flinched, taking a half-step back.
Chloe stepped between them, her face burning with humiliation and rage. "Stop talking to my father like that! You pathetic little—"
"Your father?" Maya cut her off, letting out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed off the high ceiling. She looked directly into Chloe's bewildered eyes, her expression deadpan and unyielding. "Ask him whose name is actually on the deed to this entire school district. Ask him whose family fund bought the silence that keeps you living in that mansion."
Arthur’s face turned deathly pale. He lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing Maya’s wrist. "Enough."

Maya didn't flinch. She simply looked down at his grip, then raised her dark eyes to meet his terrified gaze. "Let go, Arthur. Or the next thing I drop won't be lunch."
