Chapter 15 - The Bell Tolls for Yesterday

The morning sun broke through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, casting a warm, golden light across the empty marble floors. The luxury furniture, the expensive art pieces, and the glittering decorations had all been cleared away by the federal marshals at dawn, leaving the grand living room echoing with emptiness.
Chloe sat on the bare floor near the window, wrapped in a simple woolen blanket, staring blankly out at the bustling city streets far below. Her designer handbag was gone. Her high ponytail was replaced by a messy, loose braid. The green and white letterman jacket lay folded neatly beside her like a discarded skin from a previous life she no longer belonged to.
Arthur stood beside her, wearing a plain dark coat, holding a single cardboard box containing their few remaining personal belongings—a couple of old photo frames, some documents, and a silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather before the forgery began.
"Come on, Chloe," Arthur said softly, his voice gentle, devoid of the cold authority he had carried for two decades. "The car is waiting downstairs."
Chloe didn't move for a long moment. Then, slowly, she stood up, clutching the blanket around her shoulders. She looked around the cavernous, empty penthouse one last time, realizing that the illusion of power was truly gone. For the first time in her life, she wasn't protected by her father's money, her status, or her social cruelty. She was just a regular person, facing a regular world.
As they stepped out of the private elevator into the building lobby, the morning chill of the city air hit them immediately.
Across the street, standing near the entrance of a quiet public park, Maya stood watching them. She wasn't smiling, nor was she glaring. She wore her simple dark coat, her long dark hair catching the morning breeze.
Arthur paused for a fraction of a second, locking eyes with Maya across the avenue. He gave her a small, respectful nod—a silent acknowledgment of a debt finally paid in full.

Maya nodded back once, then turned her gaze away, walking calmly down the sidewalk toward the school district where it all began, leaving the ghosts of yesterday behind her in the cold morning light.
Chloe clutched her father's arm as they stepped off the curb, walking together into the crowded street without looking back, as the distant school bell rang out across the city, signaling the start of an entirely new day.
