Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Before Chloe could formulate a desperate reply, a sharp, repetitive buzzing sound broke the tension. Principal Henderson’s desk phone was flashing red. With trembling fingers, the principal reached out and pressed the speaker button, desperate for any distraction from the legal nightmare unfolding in front of him.
"Principal Henderson," a breathless, panicked voice crackled through the small speaker. It was the head of the school's administrative board, sounding frantic. "Are you watching the financial news? Vance Enterprises' stock—it's plummeting! Trading has been temporarily halted!"
Arthur didn't flinch. He didn't look surprised. He simply closed his eyes, as if he had been expecting this exact blow for years.
Chloe gasped, instantly reaching into her designer handbag and pulling out her smartphone. Her fingers flew frantically across the screen, tapping and swiping until the main financial ticker loaded. Her jaw dropped. Red numbers flashed violently across the display, alongside breaking headlines from major national news networks detailing an emergency federal audit into Vance Enterprises' founding assets.
"No... no, this isn't real," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as tears of pure shock welled in her blue eyes. "Dad, look at this! They're saying the company's assets are frozen! They're saying you're under federal investigation for asset misappropriation!"
"Put the phone down, Chloe," Arthur said quietly, walking over to the desk and pulling out the leather chair opposite the principal. He sat down heavily, resting his elbows on the wood and burying his face in his hands.
"You did this," Chloe hissed, spinning around to face Maya with pure venom returning to her voice, though her hands were shaking uncontrollably. "You orchestrated all of this just to ruin us! You're nothing! You're just a nobody from the slums!"
"A nobody?" Maya stepped closer, her voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp whisper that cut through the room. "The slums you think I came from? That's the neighborhood your father locked my family out of while he lived in a penthouse bought with my grandfather's blood, sweat, and patents. Every luxury you've ever enjoyed, every designer jacket, every privileged second at this school—it was borrowed time."
Arthur raised his head slowly. His expression was remarkably calm now, stripped of the panic that had gripped him earlier. He looked at Maya not as an enemy, but as an inevitable consequence.
"You have the federal injunction," Arthur said flatly, his voice devoid of resistance. "The freeze on the accounts. You didn't just come here to show me the documents. You already filed them, didn't you?"
Maya pulled a folded white paper from her coat pocket and laid it gently beside the leather folder.

"The court order was signed this morning at 8:00 AM," Maya replied calmly. "Effective immediately. All corporate accounts, personal assets, and trust subsidiaries under the Vance name are legally frozen pending a full restitution hearing."
