Chapter 4 - The Legacy of a Promise

Principal Henderson blinked rapidly, leaning forward to squint at the gold-embossed seal resting on his mahogany desk. A nervous sweat beaded on his forehead, catching the light of the desk lamp.
"What is the meaning of this?" Henderson stammered, looking up at Arthur Vance for guidance. "Mr. Vance, is this... some kind of legal document? Why is an unverified student bringing federal files into my office?"
Arthur did not answer. He stood frozen by the window, his broad shoulders slightly hunched, looking remarkably smaller than the titan of industry who had marched into the cafeteria just twenty minutes prior. The silence in the room grew suffocating, broken only by the steady, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.
Chloe looked between her father and the mysterious girl, her arrogance momentarily faltering under the weight of the palpable dread in the room. "Dad, stop ignoring them! Tell security to drag her out of here! Why are you looking at her like that?"
"Shut up, Chloe," Arthur repeated, his voice cracking slightly. He closed his eyes, taking a deep, ragged breath before finally turning back to face them. The stern, authoritative mask had completely shattered, revealing a tired, middle-aged man trapped by his own past.
Maya remained standing beside the desk, her expression an unreadable mask of cold resolve. She traced her fingers along the edge of the leather folder, her dark eyes never leaving Arthur's face.
"You always told me that power isn't given, Arthur," Maya said, her voice echoing softly in the quiet room. "You said it’s taken, molded, and protected at all costs. But you forgot the second rule you taught me when I was seven years old."
Chloe’s expression twisted in confusion and rising fury. "What are you talking about? Who do you think you are, calling him by his first name? Dad, are you going to let her—"
"She's talking about the Vance Family Trust," Arthur interrupted, his voice hollow. He walked slowly toward the desk, his movements heavy and deliberate, as if each step required immense effort. He placed a hand gently on the corner of the leather folder, his knuckles white. "She's talking about the foundation this entire empire was built upon."
Henderson’s eyes widened in sudden realization. "Wait... Vance Family Trust? But that was liquidated over a decade ago. The original founder—"

"The original founder was Maya's grandfather," Arthur finished, looking directly into Maya's unwavering gaze. "The man whose signature I forged when I was young, desperate, and completely broke."
