Chapter 8 - The Tunnel Chase

The darkness in the sub-basement was absolute for three agonizing seconds before emergency red floor-lighting flickered on, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete floor. Clara dropped to her knees, scrambling blindly toward the corner where little Mia was still strapped into the monitoring chair, fast asleep.
"Mia! Wake up, sweetie," Clara whispered frantically, fumbling with the electronic release latches on the safety harness. The toddler stirred slightly, letting out a soft whimper before her eyes fluttered open in confusion.
From across the room, the heavy steel door of the escape tunnel groaned as it swung open, revealing the damp, dimly lit corridor that led toward the cliffside exit. Julian’s silhouette was visible for a split second against the pale light of the outside world before he disappeared into the tunnel.
Clara finally managed to pop the harness open, scooping Mia into her arms. The toddler buried her face sleepily into Clara’s shoulder, murmuring, "Mommy... want to go home."
"We are going home, baby. Just hold on to me," Clara whispered, kissing the top of Mia's head. She grabbed the silver thumb drive off the console where she had temporarily dropped it, slipping it securely into the pocket of her torn cardigan.
As Clara turned toward the exit, Elena stepped out from the shadows of the utility corridor, blocking the path to the stairs with a heavy iron pipe gripped tightly in her hands.
"You aren't going anywhere, Mrs. Vance," Elena said, her voice devoid of its previous corporate neutrality, replaced by sheer, desperate panic. "If Julian gets caught, I go down with him. The offshore accounts are tied to my name too."
Clara stared at the maid in disbelief. "Elena, he used you! The debt relief, the live streams—you were just a disposable tool to him from day one."
"At least he paid my price!" Elena lunged forward, swinging the pipe in a violent arc toward Clara’s shoulder.
Clara twisted to the side at the last possible second, using her body to shield Mia from the blow. The iron pipe grazed the wall with a deafening screech of scraping concrete, sending a shower of sparks flying into the air. The impact threw Elena off balance, her foot catching on a loose cable tray near the floor.
Elena tumbled backward, hitting her head hard against the edge of a steel server rack before collapsing motionless onto the damp floor.

Clara didn't look back. She clutched Mia tighter against her chest and bolted past the fallen maid, charging straight into the dark, echoing maw of the escape tunnel.
