Chapter 14 - The Iron Trap

The heavy steel door sealed shut with a deafening hydraulic hiss, throwing the vault back into a claustrophobic, amber-lit gloom. Clara spun around and slammed her fists against the unyielding metal, but the digital keypad on the outside had already been smashed from the control panel.

"Don't waste your energy, Clara," Julian said, his voice disturbingly calm as he tossed the canvas duffel bag onto a leather chair. "The locking mechanism on this vault is mechanical. Once it engages from the inside, it can only be opened with the master biometric scanner—which was disconnected when the main power grid failed."

Clara turned back to face him, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Then you've trapped yourself in here with me. You can't detonate the gas lines without killing yourself too."

Julian let out a quiet, bitter laugh, walking slowly toward the center of the room. "Do you really think I care about surviving this anymore? Arthur built an empire on blood and lies, and I was his executioner. But you, Clara... you were the only real thing in my life."

"Don't you dare talk about reality," Clara snapped, stepping toward him with pure venom in her eyes. "You used Mia as a shield. You tried to make me an accomplice to my own daughter's murder."

"I protected her from the board," Julian insisted, his voice rising slightly for the first time, cracking with raw emotion. "If Arthur’s people had taken her, they would have raised her as a corporate asset just like they did to you. I had to make them think she was poisoned so they would leave her alone!"

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What are you talking about?"

"The food wasn't poisoned with toxins, Clara," Julian said, his gaze dropping to the floor between them. "It was a simulated antidote. I gave her the serum before you even walked into the foyer. I knew Elena was broadcasting the live stream, so I staged the entire confrontation to look like an attack—because an attacked child is a liability the board drops immediately. It was the only way to sever her legal ties to the trust."

Clara stared at him, her mind struggling to process the horrifying, twisted logic behind his actions. "You... you faked the poisoning to save her from the trust?"

"I saved her life," Julian whispered, taking one final step closer. "And now, the only thing left to save is the truth."

Before Clara could respond, the entire floor beneath them shuddered violently. A low, thunderous rumble echoed from deep within the foundation of the estate, followed by the hiss of escaping gas cutting through the ventilation grates. The electronic timer on Julian's detonator suddenly shifted from a blinking red light to a solid, frantic crimson glow.

Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, shoving Clara violently toward the heavy emergency air-vent shaft in the back wall just as the primary gas line ignited with a muffled roar.
