Chapter 4 - The Hidden Blueprint

Clara’s hand froze an inch away from the final page of the autopsy report. Her breathing hitched as the threat regarding Mia echoed in the empty corridor. She slowly stood up, letting the incriminating document slip from her trembling fingers back onto the marble floor.

"Julian, if you wanted the estate, you already have the deeds," Clara called out to the surveillance lens, forcing as much calm into her voice as she could muster. "Why drag Mia into this? She’s your daughter too."

The intercom crackled with static before Julian’s natural voice finally cut through the distortion, stripped of any synthetic filters. "She is the only leverage that keeps you compliant, Clara. You always were too smart for your own good, digging into medical files that were supposed to be incinerated with the old man."

"My father trusted you," Clara said, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the betrayal set in fully. "He brought you in off the streets when you had nothing, gave you a badge, gave you access to everything."

"And I repaid him by keeping the wolves away until the pack was mine to command," Julian replied coldly from somewhere deep within the subterranean levels. "Now listen closely. On the bookshelf in the private study, behind the leather-bound volumes of maritime law, there is a silver thumb drive. Bring it to the basement elevator shaft in ten minutes. If you are late, Elena will feed Mia her afternoon medicine."

The line clicked dead. Clara didn't hesitate. She turned and sprinted down the long hallway toward the private study, her cream-colored cardigan snagging slightly on a brass wall sconce.

The study was dark, the heavy velvet drapes drawn tight against the afternoon sun. Clara moved instinctively to the mahogany bookshelves, her fingers scanning the spines of the leather-bound books until she felt the hidden latch behind the maritime collection. With a soft click, a concealed panel swung open, revealing a small wall safe and a single silver thumb drive resting on a velvet cushion.

As Clara reached in and grabbed the drive, a small LED light on the safe’s interior began flashing a rapid amber warning. A mechanical whirring sound emanated from the base of the bookshelf, followed by the sound of heavy steel bolts sliding across the study's only exit.

Clara spun around just as the heavy oak doors of the study locked themselves from the outside, trapping her inside a windowless vault with no obvious way out.

On the desk, an old desktop computer suddenly flickered to life, displaying a live video feed of Julian holding a crying Mia over an open elevator shaft in the basement.
