Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Voice

The harsh white glare of the emergency strobes cut through the amber gloom of the sub-basement. Clara froze with her hand hovering over the bubbling acid vat, while Julian’s gaze snapped from her to the primary control console where a secondary communication channel had just forced itself open.
"Put the drive down, Clara. And Julian, step away from the child," a crisp, authoritative voice commanded through the static-laced speakers.
Julian’s posture stiffened instantly. The calm, predatory arrogance that had defined his demeanor all afternoon vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid tension. "That's impossible," Julian muttered under his breath. "The external communications relay was severed hours ago."
"Nothing is severed when you rely on satellite relays routed through offshore accounts, Mr. Vance," the voice replied smoothly. A tall figure stepped into the high-definition view of the control room’s external security monitor—a middle-aged man in a tailored gray suit, wearing wire-rimmed glasses that caught the glare of the flashing lights.
Clara lowered her hand away from the acid vat, clutching the silver thumb drive tightly to her chest. "Director Vance?" she breathed out, recognizing the senior partner of the firm who had supposedly retired to Switzerland five years ago.
"Hello, Clara. I’m sorry it took so long to bypass your husband's digital blockade," the older man said through the monitor, his tone dangerously polite. "Julian has always been thorough with his security protocols, but he was always terrible at covering his digital footprint."
Julian turned sharply toward the camera feed, his jaw locked so tight the muscles pulsed visibly. "You should be dead, Arthur. The flight over the Alps—"
"Was heavily insured and meticulously staged, much like the 'accidents' you arranged for Clara’s father and our previous board members," Arthur interrupted, his expression hardening behind the glass lenses. "You thought you could inherit the empire by marrying into the family and slowly starving out the bloodline? You underestimated how many people wanted you out of power, Julian."
Clara looked between the monitor and Julian, the horrifying puzzle finally clicking together in her mind. "You didn't just work for my father, Julian... you were Arthur's muscle before you turned on him too."
Julian didn't deny it. Instead, a dark, low chuckle escaped his lips as he reached slowly into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. "Arthur, you always were a coward hiding behind a desk in Geneva while the real work was done in the dirt."
"Don't do it, Julian," Arthur warned sharply on the screen. "The entire perimeter of the estate is currently surrounded by federal marshals and corporate security teams loyal to the true board. You have nowhere left to run."
Julian’s hand emerged from his jacket holding a small, heavy-duty master override keycard. With a swift motion, he swiped it across the main terminal console, instantly overriding every security lock in the building.

The entire sub-basement plunged into total darkness as the backup generators were violently shut down from within. In the pitch black, the sound of heavy metal footsteps echoed toward the hidden escape tunnel behind the server racks.
