Chapter 3 - The Sealed Perimeter

The heavy echo of the deadbolts sliding into place reverberated through the foyer like a gunshot. Clara rushed toward the double wooden doors, throwing her weight against them, but they remained as immovable as granite. The smart locks had been overridden from the master terminal in the basement bunker—Julian’s domain.

"Open this door, Julian!" Clara shouted, her fists pounding uselessly against the thick mahogany panels. "You can't keep us locked in here indefinitely. The authorities will trace that live stream Elena was broadcasting!"

Behind her, the maid was already packing her smartphone into a leather pouch, her face impassive. "There are no authorities coming, Mrs. Vance. Mr. Vance rerouted all local emergency frequencies to a closed-loop network an hour ago. To the outside world, this entire estate is undergoing routine structural fumigation."

Clara whipped around, her eyes wide with disbelief. "You’ve been helping him lock down the house from the inside? How long have you been on his payroll, Elena?"

"Since the day my brother’s medical debts were mysteriously paid off in full," Elena answered without a trace of remorse, walking toward the service corridor. "Survival in this house requires picking the side with the keys. I suggest you find a quiet room and wait for further instructions."

With a sharp click, the service door swung shut, leaving Clara entirely alone in the cavernous foyer. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the distant, rhythmic hum of the estate’s auxiliary generators kicking into overdrive.

Clara dropped to her knees near the spilled papers from the fallen cabinet. She began gathering the scattered documents, her fingers brushing against a crumpled medical report bearing her late father's signature. As she unfolded it, a cold chill washed over her spine. The document wasn't a standard health check; it was an autopsy addendum detailing anomalous toxins found in her father's bloodstream on the night of his sudden passing three years ago.

The handwriting in the margin matched Julian’s precise, angular script. He hadn't just taken over the estate's security after her father’s death; he had engineered the transition from the very beginning.

A soft click from the ceiling vent overhead made Clara freeze. She looked up to see the red lens of a micro-camera tracking her movement from the molding. A synthetic voice, synthesized through a voice-changer, hissed from the tiny speaker beside it.

"Put the autopsy report down, Clara, unless you want Mia to experience the exact same symptoms before sunset."
