Chapter 6 - The Darkness Below

The emergency backup generators sputtered to life, casting a sickly, flickering amber glow across the concrete walls of the stairwell. Clara descended the steps two at a time, her cream-colored cardigan torn at the elbow and her palm wrapped in a makeshift bandage ripped from the hem of her dress.
As she reached the bottom landing, the heavy iron door to the sub-basement stood half-open. The sound of heavy machinery echoed through the corridor, mixing with the chilling sound of Julian’s voice calling out into the empty space.
"You can run down here all you want, Clara, but the elevator shaft is automated," Julian’s voice bounced off the stone walls, disorienting and omnipresent. "You’ll never reach the bottom before the descent mechanism triggers."
Clara crept along the shadows of the utility corridor, keeping her footsteps light against the damp concrete. She reached the threshold of the main control room and peered inside.
Julian was standing by the central console, his dark navy suit jacket discarded on a nearby chair, revealing the dense web of dark tattoos covering his forearms and shoulders. Mia was no longer dangling over the shaft; she was strapped securely into a high-tech monitoring chair in the corner of the room, fast asleep from a mild sedative administered through the room's air filtration system.
Clara’s blood boiled. She stepped fully into the doorway, the silver thumb drive clutched tightly in her bloodied hand.
"Let her go, Julian. The drive is right here," Clara said, her voice cutting sharply through the hum of the servers.
Julian turned around slowly, a dark smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He didn't look panicked; in fact, he looked entirely relaxed, as if he had anticipated this exact confrontation from the beginning.
"You actually brought it," Julian noted, walking slowly toward her with his hands loose at his sides. "You traded your family's final safeguard for a sleeping child who won't even remember this by tomorrow."
"She’s my daughter," Clara hissed, holding her ground. "She’s not a bargaining chip for your corporate takeover."
"She is the key to everything, Clara," Julian said, stopping just a few feet away from her. "The board doesn't care about the embezzlement logs. They care about lineage. And as long as Mia is the sole heir to the Vance holdings, whoever controls her controls the entire conglomerate."
Clara raised her hand, flashing the silver drive. "Then take the drive and let us walk out of here. If you don't, I drop this into the acid disposal vat behind you, and the encryption keys are lost forever."
Julian’s eyes flicked to the vat of bubbling chemical waste glowing green behind him, and for the first time, a genuine flicker of unease crossed his scarred features.
"You wouldn't," Julian whispered.
"Try me," Clara replied, stepping backward toward the vat with the drive poised directly over the toxic liquid.

Suddenly, the overhead security lights flashed bright white, and a familiar voice echoed from the wall-mounted intercom, freezing them both in place.
