Chapter 11 - The Traitor's Badge

The sudden metallic click of the assault rifle safety switching off froze everyone on the cliffside path. Senior Director Arthur stiffened, his hand hovering mid-air before he slowly lowered it, turning his head to look at the marshal holding the weapon.

"Agent Miller, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Arthur’s voice lost its polished composure, replaced by a sharp, panicked edge. "Lower that weapon immediately. That's a direct order from the executive committee."

Agent Miller didn't lower the rifle. Instead, he stepped forward, his tactical helmet casting a shadow over his eyes, though the grim line of his mouth was unmistakable.

"The executive committee doesn't exist anymore, Director," Miller said, his voice steady and cold. "The Department of Justice’s internal corruption division raided the Geneva headquarters twenty minutes ago. Every offshore account you and Julian set up has been frozen under federal seizure warrants."

Clara stared at the marshal in disbelief, her arms still wrapped securely around a sleepy Mia. "You're with federal internal affairs?"

"Special Agent Miller, DOJ Anti-Corruption Task Force," Miller confirmed, briefly flashing a silver badge with his left hand while keeping the rifle trained on Arthur. "We've been building a RICO case against this entire corporate board for three years. Julian Vance was just their primary enforcement arm; Arthur here was the architect."

Arthur forced a tight, nervous smile, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with trembling fingers. "You have no jurisdiction out here, Agent. This is private property under corporate sovereignty agreements."

"Corporate sovereignty doesn't cover kidnapping, embezzlement, and premeditated homicide," Miller retorted sharply. He gestured with a nod toward two other marshals who moved in behind Arthur, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto the older man’s wrists with a definitive click.

Arthur stumbled forward as he was forced to his knees, his tailored gray suit staining against the dirt path. He glared up at Clara with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think you've won something here today, Clara?" Arthur sneered, blood vessels popping in his eyes. "Without Julian’s security network and my financial structuring, that entire estate will be repossessed by the banks before the week is out. You'll be left with nothing."

"I'll have my daughter, and I'll have my freedom," Clara replied, her voice steady and resolute as she looked down at Arthur without an ounce of fear. "And that is something neither you nor Julian could ever buy."

Miller nodded respectfully to Clara. "We have a secure transport waiting down the mountain for you and your daughter, Mrs. Vance. You'll need to make a formal statement, and then we can escort you anywhere you want to go."

Clara took a deep, shuddering breath of the clean ocean air for the first time all day. But just as she turned toward the waiting transport, her phone buzzed violently in her coat pocket with an incoming encrypted message from an unknown number.
