Chapter 10 - The Aftermath of the Fall

The heavy downdraft from the tactical helicopter whipped the loose stones and dust across the cliffside path as Clara shielded Mia’s eyes against her chest. The white spotlight remained locked on the churning white foam far below where Julian had vanished into the ocean waves.
Within seconds, the transport chopper touched down on a wider clearing fifty yards up the path. Armed federal marshals in tactical gear poured out of the cabin, securing the perimeter with practiced precision. Senior Director Arthur stepped down from the aircraft behind them, his tailored gray suit immaculate despite the swirling wind. He walked slowly toward Clara, his expression a mask of calculated neutrality.
"Are you and the child unharmed, Clara?" Arthur asked, stopping a respectful distance away as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses.
Clara stood frozen for a moment, her muscles locked in a state of hyper-awareness. She clutched Mia tighter, the toddler finally waking up fully and letting out a soft, confused cry.
"She's safe," Clara said, her voice shaking with a mixture of adrenaline and profound exhaustion. "But Julian is gone. You could have pulled him up. You could have forced him to stand trial for everything."
Arthur shook his head slowly, looking out over the edge of the cliff. "Julian knew too much about the international syndicates backing our board. If he had stood trial in a public courtroom, a lot of very powerful people would have been exposed—including some who are currently standing right behind me."
Clara’s eyes narrowed as she looked past Arthur to the federal marshals securing the perimeter. "So this was never about justice, Arthur. It was about tying up loose ends."
"It was about restoring stability to an institution that has existed for over a century," Arthur replied smoothly, holding out his hand. "Now, Clara, I believe you have something that belongs to the board. The silver thumb drive."
Clara instinctively pressed her hand against the pocket of her cream-colored cardigan where the drive rested. The weight of it felt heavier now, charged with the full, dark history of her family's legacy.
"If I hand this over to you, what guarantees do I have that Mia and I won't suffer the same 'accidents' as my father?" Clara demanded, her voice cutting through the remaining noise of the idling helicopter rotors.
Arthur lowered his hand, his expression turning sharp and cold. "You don't have any guarantees, Clara. But you do have a choice. You can either board that helicopter with me and take your rightful place as sole heir under our protection, or you can walk down this mountain alone with a toddler and no resources left in the world."
May you like
Before Clara could answer, a sharp clicking sound echoed from behind Arthur, and one of the federal marshals suddenly raised his assault rifle, aiming it not at Clara, but directly at Arthur’s chest.
