Chapter 12 - The Unsent Message

The vibration of the smartphone against Clara’s ribs felt like a physical jolt. She carefully shifted Mia into one arm, pulled the device from her pocket, and tapped the screen. The encrypted message displayed a single line of text accompanied by a high-resolution photograph: a live feed of the front gates of the estate, where a familiar black armored SUV was parked with its engine idling.
The accompanying text read: “The game isn't over until the board is empty, Clara. Check the trunk of your car.”
Clara froze. She looked up at Special Agent Miller, who was currently guiding a handcuffed Arthur toward the transport chopper.
"Agent Miller, wait," Clara called out, her voice tight with sudden dread.
Miller turned back, his expression professional and alert. "What is it, Mrs. Vance? Did you drop something?"
"Julian... his body hasn't been recovered yet, has it?" Clara asked, holding out the phone screen for him to see.
Miller glanced at the photograph, his brow furrowing instantly. He tapped his shoulder radio. "All units, verify perimeter status at the lower gates. We have a potential secondary vehicle movement."
Static hissed through the radio before a panicked voice crackled back: "Agent Miller, we’ve got a breach! The backup vehicle we left parked by the service entrance has just been cleared out. The security logs show someone used a master override code—one we didn't think existed!"
Arthur let out a low, gravelly laugh from where he sat on the gravel. "You fools really thought Julian was just muscle? He built the core architecture of this entire network. He always kept an analog backup key buried where no federal algorithm could ever touch it."
Miller grabbed Arthur by the collar of his jacket, hauling him upright. "Where is he heading?"
"He's going back for the vault," Arthur wheezed, smiling through bruised lips. "Not the one in the basement. The primary repository beneath the main house. That's where the real leverage is kept."
Clara looked down at Mia, who had fallen back asleep against her shoulder, entirely unaware of the nightmare closing in around them once again. Clara knew she couldn't run anymore. If Julian was heading back to the estate, he was coming for the one thing left that could prove her family's innocence—or destroy what remained of her life.
"Take my daughter," Clara said firmly, handing a sleeping Mia over to Agent Miller’s startled assistant. "Put her in the chopper and get her off this mountain."
"Mrs. Vance, I can't let you go back down there alone," Miller protested, drawing his sidearm.

"I'm not asking for your permission, Agent," Clara said, her eyes flashing with ice-cold determination as she turned and sprinted back toward the escape tunnel. "I'm finishing this."
