Chapter 5 - The Basement Countdown

The computer screen flickered with a high-definition feed straight from the mansion’s subterranean levels. Julian stood near the edge of an open elevator shaft, the sheer drop disappearing into absolute blackness. Little Mia clung to his dark navy suit jacket, her small frame trembling as she cried out for her mother.

Clara slammed her palms against the locked wooden doors of the study, screaming out in sheer terror. "Julian! Don't you dare touch her! I have the drive! I have what you want!"

The audio from the live feed crackled loudly in the confined space of the study. Julian didn't look up at the ceiling camera; he kept his eyes fixed on the helpless toddler in his arms.

"You took too long, Clara," Julian’s voice echoed through the desktop speakers, dangerously calm and detached. "The ten-minute window expired three minutes ago. Every second you spend locked in that study is a second closer to the safety latches releasing."

On the monitor, Mia let out a sharp, piercing shriek as Julian unbuckled one of the safety harnesses anchoring her to his chest. The toddler dangled precariously over the dark void, her tiny hands grasping desperately at his lapels.

Clara frantically scanned the walls of the study for an emergency release mechanism. Her eyes landed on an antique brass fire extinguisher mounted behind a glass display case near the desk. Without thinking, she grabbed a heavy bronze paperweight and smashed the glass, cutting her palm on a sharp shard. The stinging pain was instantly overridden by adrenaline as she wrenched the heavy canister free.

"If you drop her, Julian, I swear I will burn this entire empire to ash with you inside it!" Clara roared, swinging the heavy brass cylinder directly into the reinforced locking mechanism of the study doors.

The metal groaned under the impact, the electronic circuits sparking violently as short-circuits cascaded through the wall panel.

On the screen, Julian paused, his expression shifting from cold arrogance to sudden uncertainty as he noticed the smoke beginning to rise from the upper-floor ventilation grid.

"You’re destroying the very evidence you came here to protect," Julian warned, his grip on Mia tightening just a fraction.

"I don't care about the evidence anymore!" Clara screamed, striking the lock a second time with all her remaining strength. "I care about my daughter!"

With a loud snap, the study doors burst inward, showering the hallway with splinters and glowing embers. Clara dropped the extinguisher, sprinting down the corridor toward the basement stairs just as the mansion's main power grid failed entirely, plunging the estate into pitch darkness.
