Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

The cold expanse of the carpet offered no comfort as Clara pushed herself up onto her elbows. The faint red indicator light on the maid’s smartphone still blinked rhythmically from the edge of the hallway. Clara’s breath came in ragged gasps, her mind racing to connect the pieces of the trap Julian had just sprung around her.

"Put the phone down, Elena," Clara commanded, her voice surprisingly steady despite the ringing in her ears.

Elena, dressed impeccably in her black dress and white apron, didn't lower the device. Instead, the maid took a deliberate step backward, her expression entirely devoid of the warmth she usually displayed toward the household staff.

"I take my orders directly from the head of security now, Mrs. Vance," Elena replied, her tone flat and mechanical. "Mr. Vance made it very clear that all communications regarding the child’s safety must be logged and broadcast to the board of directors immediately."

Clara stood up, brushing the dust from her cream-colored cardigan with trembling fingers. "Julian isn't just the head of security anymore, Elena, and you know it. He’s locked down the perimeter, cut the landlines, and now he’s manufacturing evidence to make it look like I tried to harm my own daughter."

"The video speaks for itself, madam," Elena countered, holding the screen up slightly so Clara could see the chat stream scrolling past with thousands of outraged viewer comments. "You kneeling by the tray, the unverified ingredients, and Mr. Vance’s timely intervention. To the outside world, you are a compromised mother."

Clara stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce determination. "If I were trying to harm Mia, why would I use food that was tested and sealed in front of the estate's medical officer? Julian intercepted that tray before it even reached her table. He planted those toxins himself just to manufacture a crisis."

Elena’s expression flickered for a split second—a microscopic hesitation that didn't escape Clara’s trained observation. "Mr. Vance protects this estate from threats, Mrs. Vance. If you are not the threat, why are you the one trapped inside it?"

"Because Julian knows what is hidden in the east wing safe," Clara said quietly, leaning in so the microphone on the phone picked up every whispered syllable. "He knows that the security logs from the night of the merger will prove he didn't just guard the vault—he emptied it."

Elena slowly lowered the phone, her thumb hovering over the stop-recording icon. The screen dimmed, plunging the immediate hallway into a tense, heavy silence.

"You shouldn't have mentioned the vault, Clara," a deep, distorted voice echoed from the intercom speaker mounted above the doorway.

Clara spun around just as the heavy oak doors at the main entrance slammed shut and bolted themselves from the outside with a deafening metallic click.
