Chapter 9 - The Knock at the Front Door

Mark froze, the chilling confidence in Clara’s voice sending a violent shiver down his spine. He slowly turned his head away from his wife, keeping one firm hand pinned to her shoulder as he stared down the bright, empty hallway toward the heavy oak front door.
Three slow, deliberate knocks echoed through the quiet house.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Elena emerged cautiously from the hallway corner, her hands still resting on the handles of Martha’s wheelchair. Her brow furrowed in deep concern as she looked toward the entrance. "Mr. Vance, did you call the authorities already?"
"No," Mark whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I didn't even get to unlock my phone."
Clara let out a low, raspy chuckle beneath Mark's grip. "You were so busy playing detective with my past, Mark, that you forgot to check who else I invited over this morning," she whispered triumphantly, her green satin shirt rustling as she shifted slightly. "I knew this day was coming. I prepared for it weeks ago."
Mark released his grip on Clara just enough to take a cautious step backward, his eyes fixed on the hallway. "Who is at the door, Clara?" he demanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying premonition.
Before Clara could answer, a loud, metallic click echoed from the front door lock. The heavy oak panel slowly swung open, revealing two uniformed police officers standing on the front porch. But it wasn't the local police department badge gleaming on their chests that made the blood run cold in Mark’s veins—it was the federal insignia.
"FBI. Special Agent Miller," the lead officer announced in a booming, authoritative voice that carried effortlessly into the kitchen. "We have a federal warrant to search the premises in connection with an ongoing interstate financial fraud and missing persons investigation involving David Miller."
Mark felt the ground completely drop out from under him. He slowly turned his head back to look at Clara, whose smile had grown wider, colder, and utterly terrifying.

"Surprise, honey," Clara whispered sweetly, her voice dripping with venom. "You thought you were investigating me. But you were the primary suspect on the warrant all along."
