Chapter 7 - The Confession of the Vault

The gleaming pile of jewelry on the quartz island caught the sharp morning light, casting fractured, glittering reflections across the stainless-steel appliances. Clara stared at the spilled heirlooms, her frantic expression suddenly flattening into a cold, chilling defiance. She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand, her posture stiffening.

"You think you know everything, don't you, Mark?" Clara muttered, her voice dropping its frantic edge, replaced by a bitter, venomous edge. "You think you're the victim here? You have no idea what it took to keep this family afloat while you were busy climbing corporate ladders and ignoring me for weeks on end."

"Stealing from my mother and hiding a corpse in the kitchen floorboards is your idea of keeping us afloat?" Mark yelled, his anger flaring back to life as he slammed his hand against the island.

"He deserved what he got!" Clara yelled back, pointing fiercely toward the floor. "David was a monster! He kept me locked in this very house! When I finally fought back with that brass candlestick, it was either him or me!"

Elena didn't flinch at the sudden outburst. Instead, she quietly reached into the large medical bag hanging from the back of Martha's wheelchair and pulled out a heavy black ledger. She placed it gently on the edge of the counter, right next to the pile of stolen jewelry.

"What is that?" Mark demanded, glancing down at the worn leather-bound book.

"It’s David’s personal diary," Elena answered quietly. "Which Mrs. Martha managed to pull out of the HVAC intake vent in the hallway two months ago, before you even hired me, Mr. Vance. She’s been hiding it under her mattress, waiting for the right moment to show you."

Mark’s hands trembled as he picked up the ledger and flipped it open. The pages were filled with neat, orderly handwriting detailing dates, financial accounts, and increasingly desperate entries about Clara’s erratic behavior, financial demands, and mounting threats.

"She lied to you about everything, Mark," Martha said from her wheelchair, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "She didn't kill him in self-defense. The ledger shows she planned it weeks in advance to collect his massive insurance payout. The exact same insurance payout she used as the down payment on this house."

Clara’s eyes widened in sheer panic as she realized the full extent of what they had uncovered. Her gaze darted frantically toward the back door leading out to the patio.

"You won't get away with this," Mark whispered, his eyes locked on the diary entries detailing the cold-blooded murder. He pulled out his phone with a shaking hand, his thumb hovering over the emergency dial. "I'm calling the police right now."

Before Mark could press a single digit, Clara lunged forward with blinding speed, snatching the heavy brass candlestick off the counter and swinging it violently toward his head.
