Chapter 11 - The Hidden Compartment

Agent Miller motioned to the second officer, who immediately began securing the perimeter of the kitchen. "Secure the suspect and bring in the forensic excavation team. We received an anonymous tip this morning detailing human remains buried beneath the southern kitchen floorboards."

"Anonymous tip?" Mark asked, looking desperately at the agent. "Clara called you. She set this whole thing up to frame me!"

"The tip came from an encrypted burner phone registered to an address across town," Agent Miller replied flatly, unimpressed by the frantic protest. "An address matching your personal office locker at your firm, Mr. Vance."

Clara let out a soft, sympathetic sigh, shaking her head. "I tried to cover for him, Officer. I really did. But when he started threatening me with that candlestick because I found out what he did... I knew I couldn't protect him anymore."

Martha let out a sharp, indignant sound from her wheelchair, gripping the armrests with her frail hands. "You lying, manipulative creature!" the old woman rasped, glaring at Clara with fierce, unyielding anger. "My son is innocent! You planned every single piece of this from the very beginning!"

"Please, Mrs. Vance, calm down," Agent Miller said gently, addressing Martha with professional respect before turning back to his team. "Get the forensic tools ready. Let's see what’s under those floorboards."

Elena knelt beside Martha’s wheelchair, placing a reassuring hand over the old woman's trembling knuckles. "It's going to be all right, Mrs. Martha," Elena whispered softly, though her own eyes were filled with deep tension. "The truth always comes to light, no matter how deep it's buried."

Two forensic technicians walked into the kitchen carrying heavy metal crates filled with cutting tools, scanners, and evidence bags. Without wasting a second, one of the technicians knelt near the kitchen island, pulling out a heavy-duty circular saw.

Mark stood silently against the refrigerator, his wrists bound in plastic ties, watching with a heavy heart as the blade hovered inches above the polished hardwood floor. Clara watched too, her breath hitching slightly, though her expression remained masked in calculated confidence.

The technician pulled the starter cord, and the saw roared to life with a deafening, high-pitched scream that shook the sunlit kitchen to its core. The spinning blade lowered, biting deeply into the ancient wood, sending up a thick cloud of sawdust and revealing a dark, hidden void beneath.
