Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past

The kitchen grew deathly quiet, save for the distant hum of the refrigerator. Mark looked down at his mother, his brows furrowed in deep, agonizing confusion.

"Mom, what are you talking about?" Mark demanded, his voice trembling slightly as he glanced between the elderly woman in the wheelchair and his pale, shaking wife. "What first husband? Clara was never married before. We met in college."

Clara swallowed hard, her throat burning. Her fingers dug desperately into the quartz countertop until her knuckles turned pure white. "She's losing her mind, Mark. You know she has dementia. She's hallucinating again. Tell him, Elena! You've documented her memory lapses!"

Elena did not immediately answer. The caregiver slowly folded her hands in front of her blue scrubs, her professional demeanor slipping just enough to reveal a deep, sorrowful certainty. "Mr. Vance, I’ve kept daily logs of Mrs. Vance’s care, just as you requested," Elena said softly. "But I’ve also kept notes on things Mrs. Martha told me late at night when the house was quiet."

"What kind of things?" Mark snapped, his patience wearing dangerously thin as he turned fully away from Clara.

"About a house in upstate New York," Elena replied steadily. "About a man named David who mysteriously vanished six years ago, leaving behind a life insurance policy, a grieving young widow... and a suspiciously similar brass candlestick."

Clara gasped, pushing herself violently off the island. "You're digging into my past? You hired a private nurse and she's a private investigator?"

"I hired a professional caregiver because Mom was terrified of you!" Mark roared, the full weight of the deception crashing down on him. He grabbed Clara by the shoulders, shaking her slightly in a surge of overwhelming fury. "Tell me the truth right now! Who is David?"

"He left me!" Clara shrieked, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she thrashed against his grip. "He walked out on me just like everyone else does! I didn't hurt him!"

Martha shook her head slowly from the wheelchair, a look of profound pity crossing her aged features. "He didn't walk out, Clara," the old woman whispered, pointing a frail, trembling finger directly at the heavy floorboards beneath their feet. "He never left this house at all."
