Chapter 6 - Beneath the Hardwood

The kitchen felt unbearably hot, the bright morning sunlight streaming through the windows doing nothing to thaw the freezing terror gripping Mark's chest. He looked at Clara, who had stopped trying to run. Instead, she stood frozen against the pantry door, her breathing shallow and erratic, her green satin shirt damp with nervous sweat.
"Mark, listen to me," Clara whispered, her tone suddenly shifting into a desperate, honeyed pleading. She took a slow step toward him, holding out her hands imploringly. "It was self-defense. He came at me. I panicked. What was I supposed to do? Call the police and ruin my entire life before it even started?"
"You buried a human being," Mark said, his voice completely devoid of emotion, sounding hollow and broken. "In the home we share. In the kitchen where we cook our meals every single day."
"I didn't have a choice!" Clara sobbed, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she dropped her hands in defeat. "And when you bought this house years later, I had to keep it. I couldn't sell it, I couldn't renovate it without someone finding him. That's why I panicked when Elena wanted to clean out the pantry baseboards last week!"
Elena watched the exchange with quiet vigilance, her hands resting firmly on the handles of Martha's wheelchair. "That's why you tried to push Mrs. Martha down the hall last Tuesday, isn't it?" Elena asked evenly. "Because she noticed you chipping away at the grout near the kitchen island at midnight."
"I didn't try to hurt her!" Clara shrieked, glaring daggers at the caregiver. "She was snooping where she didn't belong! Just like she's been snooping through my things since day one!"
Martha slowly lifted her tired eyes. "I wasn't snooping, Clara," the old woman said softly, her voice steady and full of sorrow. "I was looking for my wedding ring. The one you stole from my jewelry box and claimed I lost."
Mark slowly turned his head to look at his mother, a sudden, horrifying realization washing over him. He reached into Clara's coat pocket hanging on the nearby hook, pulling out a small velvet pouch. He unzipped it and dumped the contents onto the kitchen island.
Dozens of glittering rings, diamond earrings, and family heirlooms tumbled across the quartz surface. Among them sat Martha’s distinct sapphire wedding band.

"You didn't just hide a body," Mark whispered, staring at the stolen treasures with sheer disbelief. "You've been stealing from my mother for years just to punish her for knowing the truth."
