Chapter 8 - The Second Strike

The heavy brass candlestick cut through the air with a terrifying, whistling sound. Mark threw his arms up defensively at the last possible second, taking a glancing blow to his left shoulder that sent him stumbling hard against the stainless-steel refrigerator.
"Clara, stop!" Mark roared, gritting his teeth against the searing pain in his shoulder as he regained his balance.
Clara stood chest-heaving, gripping the brass object with both hands like a club, her green satin shirt torn slightly at the sleeve. Her eyes were wide, manic, and completely detached from reality.
"You're not calling anyone!" Clara screamed, her voice echoing shrilly off the kitchen walls. "I built this life! I protected us! If I'm going down, I'm taking every single one of you with me!"
Elena acted with incredible, calm precision. Without hesitating, she grabbed the handles of Martha's wheelchair and forcefully shoved the heavy chair backward down the hallway, steering the elderly woman out of the kitchen’s danger zone just as Clara swung the candlestick a second time. The heavy metal missed Mark’s head by mere inches, smashing violently into the glass door of the microwave and shattering it into a thousand glittering shards.
"Elena, get Mom out of the house!" Mark yelled, ducking beneath Clara’s flailing arms and lunging forward to wrap his hands around her wrists.
"I'm not leaving you here with her!" Elena shouted back from the hallway entrance, though she kept Martha securely parked just around the corner out of direct harm's way.
"Go! Now!" Mark commanded, straining every muscle in his body as he wrestled the heavy brass candlestick away from Clara's fierce, desperate grip.
Clara fought like a cornered animal, kicking out with her black-pants-clad legs and scratching wildly at Mark's arms. "Let me go, Mark! You don't know what’s buried under the floor! If you open that floor, you're destroying us both!"
With a final, desperate heave, Mark wrenched the candlestick completely out of her grasp and hurled it across the room where it clattered harmlessly into the utility sink. He pinned Clara against the quartz island, his breathing ragged and his white button-down shirt stained with sweat and dust.
"It's over, Clara," Mark panted, pressing her firmly against the counter so she couldn't reach any other weapons. "The police are already on their way."
Clara stopped struggling. A strange, eerie calm washed over her face. She stopped fighting, a dark, chilling smile spreading slowly across her lips as she looked past Mark's shoulder toward the hallway.

"You think the police are going to save you?" Clara whispered softly, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "Look behind you, Mark. They're already here... but they're not here for me."
