Chapter 3 - Whispers Beneath the Floorboards

The kitchen felt suddenly devoid of oxygen. Clara stared at the crimson stain dried onto the metal teeth of the small key, her mind racing desperately for an alibi that wasn't there.
"I... I cut my finger," Clara stammered, raising her right hand as if offering proof, though her fingers were entirely unblemished. "Cooking. Last week. It was an accident."
Mark let out a harsh, bitter laugh that held no humor whatsoever. He turned his head slightly toward Elena, who gave a slow, deliberate nod.
"The blood has been tested, Clara," Mark said, his voice hard as flint. "The lab results came back this morning. It doesn't match yours. And it certainly doesn't match Mom's."
Clara felt the floor seem to tilt beneath her black pants. She clutched the edge of the quartz island for support, her green satin shirt rustling loudly in the suffocating silence. "You had things tested? Behind my back? You're spying on me in my own home?"
"In our home," Mark corrected sharply, stepping even closer. "A home where thousands of dollars in valuables have vanished over the last six months. A home where my mother has been systematically terrorized, accused of thievery, and mentally broken down day after day."
"She’s manipulating you!" Clara screamed, finally losing whatever fragile composure she had left. She pointed a trembling finger directly at the frail elderly woman sitting quietly in the wheelchair. "She hates me! She’s always hated me! She wants me gone!"
Martha slowly raised her head. Her milky eyes met Clara's with a devastating, heartbreaking clarity. For the first time all morning, the old woman parted her dry lips, her voice raspy and fragile like dry autumn leaves.
"I never hated you, Clara," Martha whispered softly, the words carrying an immense, crushing weight across the room. "I only ever wanted to protect my son from what you did to your first husband."
Clara’s breath stopped completely. The color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her looking like a ghost in the bright morning sunlight.

"What did you say?" Mark asked, slowly turning his head away from Clara to look down at his mother, his expression twisting into sheer confusion and sudden dread.
