Chapter 13 - The Mask Slips

The color drained entirely from Clara’s face, leaving her skin looking chalky and translucent under the bright kitchen lights. The masterclass performance of a helpless, terrified victim evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, venomous glare that made the air in the room drop ten degrees.

"You didn't check the IP logs thoroughly enough," Clara hissed, her voice losing its high-pitched quiver and dropping into a sharp, chilling monotone. She glared directly at Agent Miller, then snapped her venomous gaze toward Mark. "You're both incompetent fools. You ruined everything."

Mark stared at her, the final pieces of the horrific puzzle locking into place in his mind. "You framed me," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound heartbreak. "You murdered him, you hid him under the floor, you stole from my mother, and you set me up to take the fall for the entire thing."

"Of course I did!" Clara snapped, tossing her head back with a defiant, unhinged laugh that echoed off the stainless-steel appliances. "Do you have any idea what it’s like to be trapped with a man who has nothing, in a life that goes nowhere? I needed his money. And when I met you, Mark, you were just a convenient insurance policy with a clean background and a gullible heart."

Elena slowly shook her head in sheer disgust, keeping her hands steady on Martha’s wheelchair. "You are a monster," the caregiver said quietly.

"Shut your mouth, you miserable nurse!" Clara screamed, lunging forward with sudden, violent speed toward the open utility sink where the second brass candlestick still rested.

Before Agent Miller could react, Clara grabbed the heavy metal object and spun around, brandishing it like a club directly toward Martha’s defenseless wheelchair.

"If I'm going down, the old bitch goes with me!" Clara shrieked, her eyes wild and completely detached from reality as she closed the distance between them in a heartbeat.

"No!" Mark roared, throwing his weight forward against the plastic zip-tie cuffs with superhuman adrenaline.

Agent Miller drew his service weapon with lightning speed, taking a firm tactical stance, his finger resting securely along the frame of the gun as he aimed straight at Clara's chest.

"Drop the weapon right now, or I will fire!" the federal agent commanded, his voice echoing with absolute, uncompromising authority that froze Clara dead in her tracks mid-swing.
