Chapter 10 - The Federal Trap

The harsh overhead kitchen lights seemed to hum louder as Special Agent Miller’s heavy footsteps echoed down the hardwood hallway, drawing closer by the second. Mark stood paralyzed by the quartz island, his mind refusing to process the words he had just heard.
"Federal warrant?" Mark repeated, his voice cracking as he looked from the empty hallway back to Clara. "That's impossible. I didn't even know David Miller existed until twenty minutes ago!"
"That's not what the financial wire transfers say, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller’s voice boomed as he rounded the corner into the pristine kitchen, flanked by a second armed agent. The federal agent’s eyes swept the room, taking in the shattered microwave glass, the spilled pile of stolen jewelry on the island, and the bloodstained key still resting on the marble countertop.
Clara immediately dropped her defiant posture, sagging against the counter with a masterclass performance of sheer, helpless terror. She began to sob softly, burying her face in her hands.
"Officer, thank God you're here," Clara cried out, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. "He's lost his mind! He threatened me with that brass candlestick, and he kept talking about things hidden under the floorboards! I was just trying to protect myself and his mother!"
Mark stared at her in absolute shock, his mouth opening in protest. "Are you out of your mind? You just confessed to—"
"Mr. Vance, step away from the counter and keep your hands where we can see them," Agent Miller commanded sharply, resting his hand casually near his holstered firearm. The second agent immediately moved forward, placing plastic zip-tie cuffs around Mark’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Wait! You're making a massive mistake!" Elena interjected, pushing Martha's wheelchair forward to block the agents' path. "Look at the ledger! Look at the dates! Mr. Vance had nothing to do with any of this! Mrs. Vance is the one who—"
"We have bank records showing hundreds of thousands of dollars funneled from David Miller’s accounts directly into a joint offshore account bearing Mr. Vance's signature," Agent Miller interrupted coldly, holding up a thick manila folder. "And property records showing this house was purchased using funds from that exact same account."
Mark stopped struggling against the cuffs. He looked down at the gleaming quartz countertop, then slowly turned his gaze toward Clara. She was no longer crying. Through the small gap between her fingers, she was staring right at him with a chilling, triumphant smirk.
"You forged my signature," Mark whispered, the horrible truth finally crystallizing in his mind. "You used my identity to set up the offshore accounts when we first got married."
May you like
"Smart boy," Clara whispered back, just loud enough for him to hear, before turning back to the federal agents with fresh, glistening tears in her eyes.
