Chapter 2 - The Bloodstained Key

The metallic clatter of the brass candlestick rolling against the marble countertop faded into the background as Clara stared at the small, bloodstained key resting in Mark’s palm. Her breath caught in her throat, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of her neck.
"What is that?" Clara whispered, her voice barely a tremble above the hum of the refrigerator.
Mark didn't answer right away. His chest heaved with heavy, ragged breaths, his eyes locked onto Clara with a mixture of disgust and terrifying realization. The white button-down shirt he wore felt too tight, accentuating the rigid tension in his broad shoulders.
"You tell me, Clara," Mark growled, stepping closer until he invaded her personal space. "Elena found this tucked deep inside the lining of your winter coat in the front closet. Right next to the heirloom diamond necklace my grandmother left us."
Clara backed away until her spine hit the edge of the kitchen island. Her green satin button-down shirt clung to her damp skin. "No... that's impossible. She put it there! Your mother set me up!"
"Stop it!" Mark shouted, his fist slamming down onto the quartz surface, making the fruit bowl rattle violently. "Mom hasn't walked unassisted in three years! She can't even stand up without Elena's help, let alone sneak into the coat closet and plant stolen jewelry!"
Elena quietly wheeled Martha back an inch, giving the couple space while keeping her watchful eyes fixed on the unfolding drama. Martha herself remained eerily silent, her frail hands resting gently on her lap, though a single tear slipped down her weathered cheek.
"You believe them over me?" Clara’s voice cracked, turning into a high-pitched plea as desperation clawed at her sanity. "After everything we've built? Mark, look at me. I would never steal from my own family."
"Then explain why your fingerprints are all over the safety deposit box key I found hidden beneath the floorboards in the guest room," Mark said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, icy whisper.
Clara froze. The blood drained entirely from her face. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Mark slowly raised the bloodstained key, holding it up to the kitchen light. "And more importantly... explain whose blood is on this key."
