Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

Mark’s hands dropped instantly from Clara’s shoulders as if he had been burned. He stared down at the polished hardwood floor beneath his black shoes, then looked slowly back up at his mother.

"What are you saying, Mom?" Mark asked, his voice dropping to a terrified, breathless whisper. "What do you mean he never left the house?"

Clara let out a hysterical laugh, her eyes wide and unhinged. She backed away toward the hallway, her green satin shirt catching the light as she shook her head frantically. "She's insane! You can't listen to her! She's making up stories to drive us apart because she never wanted us to be together!"

"Stop moving, Clara," Mark commanded, stepping forward to block her path to the hallway. His face was a mask of cold, agonizing betrayal. "You're not going anywhere until we clear this up."

Elena gently maneuvered the wheelchair back a few inches, giving the family room while keeping the exit secure. "Mr. Vance," Elena said calmly, reaching into the pocket of her blue scrubs to pull out a folded sheaf of old newspaper clippings and printed public records. "When I first started working here three months ago, Mrs. Martha asked me to help her organize her late husband's old files in the attic. Instead, I found property tax records, missing person reports from six years ago, and a permit for extensive kitchen renovations that were never officially filed with the city."

Mark took the papers from Elena’s hand with trembling fingers. His eyes scanned the yellowed newsprint headline: LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DISAPPEARS WITHOUT A TRACE. Below it was a photograph of a man with kind eyes and short brown hair—a man who bore an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to Mark himself.

"This man... this was your previous landlord in Boston," Mark whispered, looking up at Clara with absolute horror dawning in his eyes. "The one you claimed was just an old friend who sold you your first apartment dirt cheap."

"He was abusive!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate wail as she crossed her arms defensively over her chest. "He threatened me! I had to defend myself!"

"So you killed him," Mark said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked at the brass candlestick still resting on the counter, then down at the bloodstained key in his palm. "And you buried him here? Right under our feet?"
