Chapter 9

Marcus Vance’s face drained of color, the arrogant smirk replaced by a mask of desperate realization. He looked past Luca’s shoulder toward the large glass windows of the safehouse, where he could faintly see the silhouette of the tactical guards stationed inside the living room. Luca's security detail wasn't just a handful of local enforcers; they were a well-coordinated private security force with federal backing.
"You think a few fabricated charges are going to stick?" Marcus bluffed, though his voice lacked its previous authority. "Our political connections run deeper than you can possibly imagine, Moretti."
"Your political connections are currently resigning from their board seats to distance themselves from your sinking ship," Luca replied calmly, taking a slow step forward. "The federal prosecutor has already secured the digital ledger from Julian’s offshore accounts. Every bribe, every extortion payment, and every fraudulent real estate transfer is fully documented. If you take one more step toward this house, Marcus, I'll make sure you share a prison cell with your nephew."
Marcus glared at Luca with pure venom, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. He knew when he was beaten. The Vance family empire, built on decades of corruption and intimidation, had crumbled in less than forty-eight hours because they had made the fatal mistake of underestimating a bruised woman and the man sworn to protect her.
"This isn't over," Marcus hissed, taking a slow step backward down the porch steps.
"Actually, Marcus, it is," Luca said softly.
Without another word, Marcus turned on his heel, marching briskly back to the lead SUV. The tactical team fell back in precise unison, climbing into their vehicles. Within seconds, the convoy spun around on the gravel driveway, kicking up a cloud of dust before speeding away down the private road, disappearing back into the city from whence they came.
Clara exhaled a breath she felt she had been holding for years. She walked out onto the front porch, the morning sun warming her face, and stood beside Luca. She watched the dust settle in the driveway, feeling an immense, overwhelming sense of liberation wash over her.

"It's really over?" Clara asked softly, looking up at Luca.
Luca turned his head, looking down at her with that reassuring, gentle warmth in his eyes. "It's over, Clara. Julian and his uncle will spend the next decade answering to federal judges. You are completely, permanently free."
