Chapter 1

The linoleum floor of St. Jude Memorial Hospital always smelled too strongly of industrial bleach and crushed eucalyptus. For Clara Vance, the smell was a permanent marker of survival. She stood clutching her newborn son against her chest, the infant swaddled snugly in a pale blue-striped blanket. Every breath she took felt fragile, constrained by the dull, throbbing pain of the facial bruises left behind by Julian Vance, the man who had legally been her husband for three years but practically functioned as her warden. Julian had tracked her down to the maternity ward with terrifying precision, his face twisted in familiar, ugly fury.

"I'm taking the kid!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling of the corridor, drawing terrified glances from passing orderlies. He raised a hand, stepping aggressively toward Clara, whose body locked into a defensive posture. She pulled the baby tighter, whispering a silent prayer against the soft crown of the infant’s head.

Before Julian’s hand could strike, a heavy shadow detached itself from the doorway of Room 412. Luca Moretti moved with quiet, terrifying efficiency. Dressed in a stark black turtleneck and a tailored black overcoat that contrasted sharply with the sterile white walls, Luca stepped into Julian's path. His slicked-back undercut and sharp jawline framed a face cold as winter. With a single, brutal, and calculated strike to the jaw, Luca dropped Julian to the floor. The man in the bright blue suit crumpled instantly, his head hitting the polished tile with a heavy thud.

Clara gasped, her eyes widening in shock as Julian groaned, motionless save for a twitching hand. In the background, a nurse froze near the nurses' station, her pen clattering to the floor. Luca did not blink. He stood tall over the fallen man, his expression a mask of chilling contempt. There was no triumph in his posture, only the cold authority of a man who owned the room.

Luca turned his gaze to Clara. The coldness in his eyes shifted, softening just enough to acknowledge the raw terror radiating from her bruised face. He reached inside his heavy overcoat, retrieving a wooden clipboard with a crisp paper and a sleek black pen. Stepping closer, he extended the clipboard toward her, his movements deliberate and non-threatening. He took the pen, scribbled his own signature as the legal guardian and father on the dotted line, and handed it to her trembling fingers.

"Why are you helping me?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking with fearful confusion.

Luca looked down at her, the harsh hospital lights catching the subtle warmth in his dark eyes. He spoke softly, his voice a steady anchor in the storm. "I'm Luca Moretti. You're safe now."
