Chapter 12

Spring arrived in the northern forests with an explosion of vibrant green ferns, blooming wildflowers, and the sweet, melodic songs of nesting birds. The safehouse in the woods had served its purpose, acting as the crucible in which Clara’s old life had burned away, leaving behind a refined, unbreakable strength. The legal battles in the city had concluded swiftly and decisively; Julian Vance had been convicted on multiple counts of federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and domestic abuse, sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility with no possibility of parole. Marcus Vance had been disbarred and faced ongoing investigations for obstruction.
Clara stood on the front porch of her new home—a charming, sunlit craftsman cottage located just blocks away from the newly constructed community advocacy center in the coastal town. The ocean breeze carried the refreshing scent of salt water and blooming hydrangeas. Inside, little Leo, now nearly six months old, was learning to crawl, his cheerful laughter echoing off the freshly painted walls.
Luca stood beside her on the porch, wearing a simple navy blue button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, entirely stripped of his usual intimidating black armor. He looked at home here, grounded by the quiet peace of the coast and the warmth of a family that had chosen him as fiercely as he had chosen them.
"The first counseling session at the center starts tomorrow morning," Clara said, leaning her shoulder against Luca’s chest. "We already have twelve women registered from across the state."
"You're going to help hundreds of people, Clara," Luca replied, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her securely against his side. "Your story will give them the courage they need to walk away."

"Our story," Clara corrected gently, looking up into his dark eyes with a radiant smile.
Luca smiled back—a genuine, unguarded smile that reached his eyes and completely transformed his face. He pressed a gentle kiss to the crown of her head, anchoring her in a present that was safe, bright, and entirely their own. The ghosts of the past were gone, buried beneath the weight of justice and the enduring power of redemption.
