Chapter 3

The safehouse sat at the end of a private gravel road, nestled deeply within the dense pine forests north of the city. It was a sprawling, modern architectural marvel constructed of dark timber and massive floor-to-ceiling glass panels that looked out over a misty lake. As the sedan rolled smoothly onto the circular driveway, Clara felt a strange mixture of awe and apprehension. The place was entirely isolated from the rest of the world, illuminated only by discreet pathway lights that cast long, golden shadows across the manicured lawn.

Luca stepped out first, circling the vehicle to open Clara’s door. He offered a gloved hand to help her out, a gesture of old-fashioned chivalry that clashed strangely with his dangerous reputation. Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second before placing her hand in his. His grip was warm, solid, and undeniably reassuring.

"Welcome home, Clara," Luca said softly, leading her up the stone steps toward the heavy oak double doors.

Inside, the house was warm, smelling faintly of cedarwood and roasted coffee. A stone fireplace dominated the main living area, its gentle flames crackling quietly. A middle-aged woman with silver-streaked hair and a kind, lined face stepped out from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a clean linen apron. This was Mrs. Gable, Luca’s trusted housekeeper and confidante. Her eyes immediately locked onto Clara’s bruised face and the baby in her arms. Instead of gasping or asking intrusive questions, Mrs. Gable simply nodded with deep, maternal understanding.

"The nursery upstairs is ready, dear. Warm water in the tub, fresh linens, and formula if you need it," Mrs. Gable said, her voice a soothing balm. "Let me take that heavy coat from you, Mr. Moretti."

Clara stood in the center of the expansive living room, feeling the profound weight of exhaustion settle into her bones. For the first time in months, her shoulders dropped. There were no deadbolts on the inside of the bedroom doors here, no sound of heavy footsteps stumbling up the stairs at two in the morning. Yet, the sanctuary felt heavy with secrets. Luca walked over to a wet bar, pouring two fingers of dark amber liquid into a heavy crystal glass. He swirled the liquor slowly, staring into the flames of the fireplace before taking a slow sip.

"You should rest, Clara," Luca said without turning around. "Tomorrow, we begin the legal paperwork to sever Julian's parental rights completely. But tonight, you and your son are safe under my roof."
