Chapter 2

The transition from the sterile hospital corridor to the damp midnight air of the city parking structure felt like passing through an invisible threshold. Clara kept her head down, her cheek throbbing where Julian’s ring had caught her skin three nights ago. The infant slept soundly against her heart, completely oblivious to the violence that had accompanied his entry into the world. Luca walked half a step ahead, his long black overcoat billowing slightly in the biting autumn wind. He didn't offer to carry the baby, respecting her desperate need to keep the child close, but he stayed close enough to intercept any sudden movement.

A sleek, charcoal-gray sedan waited near the exit ramp, its engine idling with a low, expensive purr. The driver’s door opened instantly at their approach, revealing a burly man with a shaved head and a sympathetic nod. Luca opened the rear passenger door for Clara, shielding her from the wind with his broad shoulder.

"Get inside, Clara. The heater is on," Luca instructed, his tone firm but devoid of malice.

Clara slid into the leather-lined interior, immediately feeling the comforting wave of warm air. She adjusted the blue-striped blanket, ensuring the baby's tiny face remained visible. Luca slid in beside her, pulling the heavy door shut, sealing out the chaotic noise of the city streets. As the sedan pulled smoothly into traffic, Clara turned her head toward the darkened window, watching the familiar neon signs of downtown blur past. She realized with a chilling clarity that she had crossed a line from which there was no return. By accepting Luca’s help, she had walked out of Julian's domestic cage and straight into a world governed by men like Luca Moretti—men who operated in the shadows.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, her voice tight with residual adrenaline.

Luca rested his forearms on his knees, turning his head to look at her in the dim dashboard light. "To a place where Julian cannot find you. My organization has safe properties across the tri-state area. This one is off the grid, fully provisioned, and secure."

"And why do you care?" Clara pressed, desperate to understand the mechanics behind this strange salvation. "Men like you don't play the white knight for strangers."

Luca stared at her for a long moment, the silence stretching between them until it became heavy with unspoken history. "Who said you were a stranger, Clara?" he replied quietly, leaving her with a riddle that made her heart race even faster.
