Chapter 7

That evening, a thick autumn fog rolled in from the lake, blanketing the safehouse in a damp, ghostly silence. Clara sat at the kitchen island, nursing Leo while Mrs. Gable quietly cleaned up the dinner dishes. The atmosphere in the house had shifted from tense anticipation to a fragile, domestic calm. For the first time in her adult life, Clara felt as though she were part of a household where she wasn't walking on eggshells.

Luca walked into the kitchen, carrying a thick woolen blanket which he draped quietly over Clara’s shoulders. The gesture was tender, surprising her.

"You should get some sleep, Clara," Luca said softly, leaning against the counter opposite her. "The legal team is filing the final divorce papers and emergency protective orders in the morning. Once the judge signs them, Julian will have zero legal standing to ever approach you or Leo again."

Clara looked up, her fingers gently stroking the soft cotton of Leo’s blanket. "And after that? What happens to me, Luca? I can't live in a hidden safehouse forever. I want a normal life. I want to work, to build something for my son."

"You can have whatever life you choose," Luca answered without hesitation. "When this is over, you will have a new identity, financial independence, and a secure foundation anywhere in the country you wish to live. My organization will ensure you are completely protected."

"And you?" Clara asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Where do you go when you're not playing guardian angel to victims of abuse?"

Luca looked away for a split second, his jaw tightening slightly. "I go back to my world, Clara. A world of shadows, ledgers, and accounts settled in the dark. Men like me don't get happy endings. We pave the roads so that others can walk on them safely."

"That sounds terribly lonely," Clara said, her words carrying a profound, genuine empathy that caught Luca off guard.

He looked back down at her, the dark depths of his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the kitchen lights. For a moment, the dangerous mafia enforcer vanished, leaving only a man who had sacrificed his own peace for the safety of others.

"Loneliness is a small price to pay for redemption," Luca replied quietly. He pushed away from the counter, offering her a respectful nod. "Sleep well, Clara. Tomorrow, your new life officially begins."
