Chapter 4

Morning sunlight flooded through the massive glass windows of the safehouse, painting the hardwood floors in brilliant golden angles. Clara woke to the sound of soft cooing from the crib that Mrs. Gable had set up in the master suite. She sat up, wincing slightly as the bruises on her face pulled against her skin, but the panic that usually greeted her mornings was mercifully absent. She spent the next hour feeding and changing her son, whom she had decided to name Leo—a quiet nod to strength and new beginnings.

Downstairs, the rich aroma of fresh coffee drew her toward the kitchen. Luca was seated at the rustic dining table, reviewing a thick stack of manila folders filled with legal documents, financial printouts, and newspaper clippings. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the intricate black ink of tattoos that wound up his skin like creeping vines. He looked less like a criminal syndicate boss and more like a corporate CEO preparing for a hostile takeover.

"Morning, Clara. How did Leo sleep?" Luca asked, looking up as she entered the room.

"Better than he ever has," Clara answered honestly, pulling out a chair opposite him. She poured herself a cup of coffee from the glass carafe, her eyes darting to the papers spread across the table. "What are all of these?"

Luca pushed one of the folders across the polished wood toward her. On the cover was a photograph of a younger Clara smiling outside a university library, taken years before she met Julian Vance. "This is your history, Clara. Or rather, the history Julian tried to erase."

Clara opened the folder with trembling fingers. Inside were bank statements, property deeds, and police reports detailing financial fraud and domestic abuse that she had tried to report years ago, only for the files to mysteriously vanish from the precinct database.

"Julian used his family's political connections to bury your complaints," Luca explained, his voice flat and controlled, though a dangerous edge lingered beneath the surface. "He systematically isolated you from your friends, drained your college savings fund, and convinced the world that you were mentally unstable. He thought he owned you."

"And why do you have all of this?" Clara asked, looking directly into Luca's dark, penetrating eyes. "How do you know so much about my life before Julian?"

Luca leaned back in his chair, resting his hands flat on the table. "Because four years ago, Clara, you worked at a community center downtown. You didn't know me, but you spent three consecutive weekends convincing a young runaway girl not to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. That girl was my sister."
