Chapter 13

The morning sun rose over the sparkling blue expanse of the ocean, casting a golden sheen across the wooden floors of Clara’s new coastal home. The scent of brewed coffee and fresh blueberry muffins drifted from the kitchen, where Luca was skillfully plating breakfast while balancing a laughing, crawling Leo on his hip. The juxtaposition of the dangerous mafia enforcer and the doting father still brought a soft smile to Clara’s face every single morning.

Clara walked into the kitchen, dressed in a professional yet comfortable linen dress, ready for her first official day as the executive director of the Vance-Moretti Advocacy Center—a name that honored her survival while cementing her unbreakable alliance with Luca.

"Breakfast is served, Madam Director," Luca said with a mock-formal bow, setting Leo down on his padded play mat with a collection of colorful wooden blocks.

Clara laughed, walking over to wrap her arms around Luca’s neck, pressing her cheek against his chest. She could feel the steady, reassuring thud of his heart beneath the soft cotton of his shirt. "I still pinch myself every morning, wondering if I'm going to wake up in that hospital hallway."

Luca wrapped his arms around her, holding her securely against the world. "You never have to look back, Clara. Every door is locked, every threat is neutralized, and your future belongs entirely to you and our son."

"Our son," Clara repeated, the words tasting sweeter with every repetition. She pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes. "And what about you, Luca? Have you found your peace as well?"

Luca looked down at her, his expression serene and deeply settled. The heavy burdens of his past life had been successfully transferred to trusted lieutenants who operated strictly within honorable bounds, allowing him to step away from the violence that had once consumed him. "My peace was never in the ledgers or the shadows, Clara. It was right here, waiting for me to be brave enough to claim it."
