Chapter 8

The morning sun broke over the pine trees in a brilliant display of amber and gold, but the cold autumn air carried a sharp bite. Clara was awake early, cradling Leo in the rocking chair by the living room window. The calm of the morning was shattered abruptly by the crunch of heavy tires on the gravel driveway outside.

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. Two unmarked black SUVs tore around the bend, coming to a screeching halt in front of the safehouse steps. The doors flew open, and four armed men in tactical gear poured out, securing the perimeter. But it was the man stepping out from the lead vehicle that made Clara’s blood run cold.

It wasn't Julian. It was Marcus Vance, Julian’s ruthless, high-powered corporate attorney and uncle. Marcus was a man who wore expensive suits and expensive cruelty with equal ease. He slammed the SUV door, adjusted his silk tie, and strode toward the front porch with absolute entitlement.

Before Marcus could reach the heavy oak double doors, Luca stepped out onto the porch, blocking his path. Luca wore his black turtleneck and long overcoat, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his posture completely relaxed despite the tactical team surrounding him.

"Marcus Vance," Luca said, his voice cutting clearly through the crisp morning air. "You're trespassing on private property."

Marcus sneered, stopping a few feet away. "Spare me the theatrics, Moretti. We know you're harboring Clara Vance and the child. Julian is my nephew, and those assets you froze belong to our family trust. Hand them over, along with the girl, or I'll have my men tear this cabin down to the foundation."

Inside the house, Clara clutched Leo tightly, her heart hammering against her ribs. She braced herself for violence, expecting Luca’s men to open fire. But Luca didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, dangerous smile spread across his face.

"Your nephew is currently sitting in a holding cell downtown facing six counts of federal wire fraud and embezzlement," Luca replied smoothly, pulling a crisp legal document from his overcoat pocket. "And you, Marcus, are about to be indicted for obstruction of justice and witness tampering if you don't turn around and walk back to your cars right now."

Marcus’s confident expression faltered for a fraction of a second. He stared at the document in Luca’s hand, realizing with sudden, terrifying clarity that they had been outmaneuvered at every turn.
