Chapter 9 - The Descent into Darkness

The narrow metal staircase spiraled downward into the suffocating gloom of the sub-basement, lit only by the sporadic pulsing of emergency red lights.
“Clara, stay behind me! We don’t know what kind of traps Arthur set down here!”
Richard yelled, his heavy boots clanging loudly against the grated iron steps as he descended right behind her.
“There’s no time, Dad! Look at the handheld monitor; the data purge is at eighty-five percent!”
Clara called back, holding up her encrypted flash drive, which was flashing a rapid, frantic orange light.
Agent Miller brought up the rear, her flashlight cutting through the thick billows of white smoke rising from the ventilation shafts below. The air grew stiflingly hot, the temperature climbing with every step they took toward the subterranean data vault. They reached the bottom landing, stepping out onto a slick concrete floor covered in standing inches of water from a ruptured sprinkler pipe.
“Over there! The main server core!”
Clara pointed toward a massive row of black server racks glowing with erratic, flickering lights at the far end of the industrial vault.
A figure was silhouetted against the blinding white glow of the central monitor, frantically typing commands into the primary keyboard console.
“Arthur! Step away from the console or so help me God I will drop you right here!”
Richard bellowed, drawing his firearm and pointing it squarely at the shadowy figure hunched over the keyboard.
The figure slowly stopped typing and turned around, revealing not Arthur Vance, but a young, terrified IT technician trembling in an oversized corporate uniform.
“I-I didn't mean to! Mr. Vance held a gun to my head! He said if I didn't execute the purge script, he’d kill my family!”
The young man sobbed hysterically, holding his hands up in surrender as he backed away from the glowing terminal.
Clara rushed past the terrified technician, dropping to her knees in the shallow water before the primary console.
“Ninety-eight percent… come on, override!”
Clara muttered frantically, plugging her flash drive into the master USB port and slamming her hand down on the enter key.
The cascading green code suddenly froze, turning a brilliant, solid blue as the progress bar locked at ninety-nine point nine percent.
“Data secured. Mainframe firewall restored.”
An automated robotic voice chimed pleasantly from the console speakers, breaking the tense silence of the vault.
Clara let out a shaky, triumphant breath, slumping backward against the cold server rack as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her battered body.
“You did it, sweetheart. You actually beat them.”
Richard whispered softly, stepping forward to pull his exhausted daughter into a gentle, protective embrace.

Suddenly, the heavy steel exit door at the top of the stairwell slammed shut with a tremendous, deafening crash, followed by the heavy clanking of an external deadbolt sliding into place.
