Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Trap “Hey! Open this door right now! Federal agents!”

Agent Miller shouted, hammering her fists against the thick steel door at the top of the stairwell with furious intensity.
There was no response from the other side, only the sinister, mechanical whir of an automated security lock engaging a heavy exterior bolt.
“They’ve sealed the vault from the outside. There’s no secondary exit on this sub-level; it’s an old Cold War bunker designed to withstand a direct blast.”
Richard said, his voice dropping an octave as he examined the reinforced hinges of the heavy steel door.
Clara pushed herself up from the wet concrete floor, wiping a streak of soot and dried blood from her swollen cheek with the back of her hand.
“It wasn't Arthur who locked us in. He’s too arrogant to hide behind a door; he would want to watch us suffocate face-to-face.”
Clara reasoned calmly, her sharp intellect cutting right through the rising panic in the room.
“Then who the hell just sealed our tomb?”
Agent Miller asked, turning back down toward the server room with her service weapon raised and scanning the shadows.
A low, rhythmic clicking sound echoed from the dark ventilation shafts running along the high concrete ceiling of the subterranean vault.
“A remote override from an external satellite uplink. Someone high up in the federal justice department just classified this entire cathedral as a restricted black site.”
A voice chimed from the darkness near the far corner of the server racks.
Richard and Agent Miller immediately spun around, aiming their weapons toward the shadowed corner as a tall figure slowly stepped out into the blue light. The man wore an unblemished dark trench coat, his face partially hidden in shadow, but the silver lapel pin of a senior assistant attorney general gleamed proudly on his chest.
“Director Vance.”
Agent Miller gasped, her jaw dropping in sheer disbelief as she recognized the man standing before them.
“Not Director yet, Agent Miller. But by morning, once this messy little family dispute is buried permanently, I’ll be running the entire department.”
The man smiled coldly, stepping into the dim light and revealing chillingly familiar aristocratic features.
Clara stared at the man in absolute shock, the missing puzzle piece of the entire global conspiracy finally clicking violently into place in her mind.
“Arthur isn't the head of the syndicate. You are. You’re Arthur’s older brother, the man who engineered my mother's disappearance twenty years ago.”
Clara accused, her voice ringing with razor-sharp fury as she stepped toward him.
The man chuckled softly, pulling a small silver remote control from his pocket and pressing a button that instantly cut off all remaining ventilation in the bunker.
“Smart girl. Too bad you’ll be sharing a very quiet, very permanent grave with your father before the morning headlines drop.”
May you like
He mocked smoothly, turning on his heel and walking out through the secondary decontamination airlock, sealing the heavy blast shield behind him forever.
