Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Witness

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a damp trench coat stepped through the ruined oak doors, his face obscured by a wide-brimmed fedora.
“Stand down, federal agents. Nobody moves another inch, or the whole block goes up in flames.”
The stranger growled, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely unfamiliar to everyone remaining inside the cathedral.
He slowly reached inside his dark, heavy coat, pulling out a tactical military-grade detonator with a blinking red toggle switch. Panic immediately surged through the remaining guests, several wealthy executives diving headfirst behind heavy wooden pews in absolute terror.
“Who the hell are you? Identify yourself or be terminated!”
Agent Miller barked, instantly raising her service weapon and aiming it squarely at the intruder's chest.
“Put the gun down, Agent, unless you want the methane lines beneath this historical district detonated right now. Arthur Vance isn't the only monster with a contingency plan.”
The man replied coldly, tilting his head up just enough to reveal a jagged scar running across his left jawline.
Richard stepped forward, placing himself directly between the armed stranger and his battered daughter, his eyes narrowing in intense suspicion.
“You’re not one of Arthur’s corporate thugs. You have the military bearing of the black-ops unit that was decommissioned in South America five years ago.”
Richard accused, his voice dangerously low and steady.
The stranger chuckled darkly, stepping further into the flickering candlelight, the warm glow illuminating his hardened, weather-beaten features.
“Sharp as ever, Richard. You always did see through smoke and mirrors. But you never realized why your logistics company was targeted in the first place.”
The man mocked, his finger hovering threateningly over the blinking red button on the detonator.
Clara stepped past her father, her swollen eye glaring at the mysterious intruder with fierce, unyielding determination.
“You were the lead mercenary on the payroll the night my mother's car was forced off the cliff. You’re the one who pulled her from the wreckage.”
Clara whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a sudden, overwhelming wave of realization.
The stranger stopped dead in his tracks, his arrogant smirk instantly vanishing, replaced by a look of profound shock as he stared at her bruised face.
“You… you have her eyes. The exact same stubborn, defiant look she gave me right before she handed me the original drive.”
The man muttered, his grip on the detonator visibly loosening for a fraction of a second.

Agent Miller capitalized on the momentary distraction, lunging forward with incredible speed to tackle the stranger to the marble floor.
