Chapter 11 - The Oxygen Countdown

The heavy hydraulic hiss of the decontamination airlock sealing shut echoed finality through the subterranean server vault.

“He’s routing the Halon fire-suppression gas into the ventilation lines! We have less than three minutes before all the oxygen is stripped from this room!”

Agent Miller yelled, desperately firing three consecutive rounds into the thick steel blast shield, the bullets ricocheting harmlessly off the reinforced alloy.

“Stop wasting ammo, Miller! Find the manual pressure-release valve behind that primary server rack!”

Richard commanded, coughing violently as a faint, sweet-smelling chemical vapor began hissing out of the overhead ceiling vents.

Clara’s head spun as the sweet gas instantly hit her lungs, making her knees buckle against the wet concrete floor. She fought the overwhelming wave of dizziness, crawling on her hands and knees toward the heavy industrial control panel at the back of the room.

“Dad… the manual release… it requires a dual-key biometric authorization protocol.”

Clara choked out, her vision blurring as the digital oxygen readout on the console dropped rapidly from twenty-one percent down to fourteen.

Richard rushed to her side, dropping to his knees and slamming his weathered hand onto the primary scanner pad while Clara pressed her bloodied palm beside his.

“Error: Authorization mismatch. Secondary genetic signature required.”

The robotic voice chimed monotonously over the blaring red emergency strobes.

“Genetic signature? What kind of insane security did these corporate bastards build into a simple bunker?”

Agent Miller cursed, joining them at the console and striking the metal housing with her flashlight in sheer frustration.

“It’s not corporate security. It’s a family vault… it requires the bloodline of the person who originally built this facility.”

Clara gasped, her breath coming in short, agonizing gasps as the oxygen level plummeted to a dangerous ten percent.

Richard’s eyes widened in sudden realization as he looked down at his daughter’s bruised, bleeding hand smeared across the metal console.

“My father… your grandfather built this cathedral during the Cold War. He used our exact lineage as the master encryption key.”

Richard declared urgently, grabbing Clara’s hand and pressing her palm deeper into the sensor alongside his own scarred fingers.

The red error light flickered violently, turning a brilliant, steady amber as the automated system processed the matching genetic sequence.

“Dual-key authorization accepted. Initiating emergency bulkhead counter-purge.”

The robotic voice chimed just as Clara’s vision faded completely to black and she slumped forward into her father’s arms.
