Chapter 5 - The Weight of the Past

The metallic clatter of the shattered pocket watch echoed sharply against the marble, breaking the tense silence of the cathedral.
“You’re bluffing, girl. That box requires biometric authorization that only I and the board possess.”
Arthur snapped, his voice losing its polished composure, a frantic edge leaking into his tone.
“My mother wasn't just a quiet housewife, Arthur. She was a brilliant cryptographer who foresaw your greed a decade ago and set up a secondary emergency protocol.”
Clara stated calmly, walking slowly toward the center aisle, her lace veil trailing behind her on the dusty floor.
She reached into the small, hidden pocket sewn into the interior lining of her white wedding dress and pulled out a sleek encrypted flash drive. The tiny blue LED light on the device blinked rhythmically, casting a cool neon glow across her bruised cheek and torn lace.
“Agent Miller, connect this to the cathedral’s broadcast system. Let every media outlet currently live-streaming this wedding see what the great Arthur Vance has hidden in Zurich.”
Clara commanded, tossing the small drive through the air with practiced ease.
Agent Miller caught the flash drive out of the air with a swift, practiced motion, immediately striding toward the altar’s audio-visual console.
“Don't you dare touch that console! If you upload those files, the entire global energy market will collapse within the hour!”
Arthur screamed, slamming his fists down onto the iron railing of the balcony, his face flushing a furious, mottled red.
“Let it burn, Arthur. Better a collapsed market than another innocent person tortured by your family's cruelty.”
Richard declared firmly, stepping protectively in front of his daughter as federal backup units flooded through the side doors.
Arthur spun around on his heel, racing away from the balcony railing toward the private elevator hidden at the back of the VIP mezzanine.
“He’s running for the rooftop helipad! Team two, intercept the roof exits immediately!”
Agent Miller shouted into her shoulder radio, typing furious commands into the altar console as the flash drive began downloading files.
Massive holographic screens lining the cathedral walls flickered to life, instantly displaying thousands of scanned pages of handwritten extortion notes and bank transfers. The remaining guests gasped in horror as their own company names and secret accounts appeared in bold red text across the giant displays. Clara stood unmoving in the center aisle, watching the digital walls expose the rotten core of the elite society that had tried to break her.
“It’s done, Clara. The federal servers have everything. Arthur has nowhere left to run.”
Agent Miller whispered quietly, looking up at the bruised bride with profound professional respect.

Clara closed her eyes for a brief second, letting out a ragged sigh of profound relief, but the heavy oak doors at the back suddenly blew inward.
