Chapter 12 - The Breath of Life

A deafening pneumatic explosion rocked the subterranean vault as the heavy exterior blast shield blew outward into the main stairwell.

Fresh, cool cathedral air rushed into the suffocating server room in a violent, swirling vortex, instantly scattering the toxic Halon gas.

“Clara! Clara, wake up, damn it!”

Richard shouted frantically, tapping her pale cheek and pressing two fingers firmly against her racing carotid pulse.

Clara gasped loudly, her eyes snapping wide open as she arched her back, coughing violently as clean oxygen flooded her burning lungs.

“I’m… I’m here. I’m breathing,”

she whispered weakly, leaning her head heavily against her father’s chest as Agent Miller stood guard at the blown-open doorway.

“That was entirely too close. The Assistant Attorney General is long gone by now, but we secured the drive before the purge completed.”

Agent Miller reported, holding up Clara’s flashing encrypted flash drive triumphantly.

Richard gently helped his daughter to her feet, their clothes soaked and covered in soot, but their eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable resolve.

“If the Attorney General thinks he can bury us in a bunker and walk away with a multi-billion-dollar empire, he severely underestimated this family.”

Richard growled, his voice steady and lethal as he shouldered his firearm.

They climbed the narrow metal staircase out of the sub-basement, stepping back into the vast, candlelit sanctuary of the St. Jude cathedral. The lingering wedding guests had long since fled, leaving behind a chaotic scene of scattered champagne glasses, overturned floral arrangements, and trampled lace.

“Where do we go from here, Dad? The entire federal justice system is compromised from the top down.”

Clara asked quietly, adjusting her torn white wedding veil over her bruised shoulder as she walked down the central aisle.

“We don't go to the police, Clara. We go straight to the international press corps anchored outside the city limits.”

Richard stated firmly, pulling his heavy coat tight against the chilly morning air drafting through the shattered front doors.

Just as they reached the grand cathedral entrance, a sleek black armored SUV pulled up sharply to the stone steps, its high-beam headlights blinding them momentarily.

The heavy passenger door swung open, and a tall woman stepped out from the vehicle, wearing a sharp grey trench coat and dark sunglasses.

“Agent Miller said you needed an extraction and a global broadcast network that the Attorney General's firewall can't touch.”

The woman stated calmly, removing her sunglasses to reveal striking, familiar hazel eyes that mirrored Clara’s own.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching entirely in her throat as she stared at the woman standing on the stone steps.
